Autumn’s Over?

Well the Autumn Cup at least! Saturday saw the end of the final long series of the season. In the GP 14s the Autumn Cup was already decided so Hugh & Rhonwen didn’t need to sail and chose to stay in the nice warm clubhouse whilst the others ventured out in windy conditions. Other positions and championship points were up for grabs –  Dave Nicholson gaining second and Ginge 3rd overall in the GP14’s.

Steve Hunt won both handicap races to take the Skiddaw trophy, with Ian Macpherson and Tony Flynn the only others to brave both races.

Sunday was another blustery day but not as windy as expected. It was still windy enough though for Neil Garrison to capsize his catamaran in the first race. He made up for it though in the second race with a first place on personal handicap.

End of the Indian Summer?

Roy Blackburn took the lead on Saturday, well for the greatest number of capsizes. For the first race of the October series, Shunty and Robbie D were a bit too eager at the start and had to return, giving Roy the chance to break free. At the windward mark Roy hoisted the kite, headed for the wrong mark and went for swim No 1!

Race 2 had both Roy and John Halliday swimming (and Roy took great pains to point out they capsized more than once). Robin again pulled away from Steve and won the race, but they they enjoyed it so much they each went for a jolly after the race to take advantage of the excellent reaching conditions.

Sunday’s forecast for wind and rain was wrong! The wind seemed to fill in before racing started and the fleets had a good beat up to mark 7, but by the 2nd beat the wind had eased and the 3rd beat had next to no wind resulting in several retirements and Neil losing a place back to William on the final leg as the wind filled back in. On a positive note Roy didn’t capsize!

Hugh was doing a little coaching with Marty Wright, but Dave and Sarah Nicholson showed the way with a convincing win.

The pennant race in the afternoon was postponed until the wind came back again about 1515hrs, but it was accompanied by further showers and there weren’t that many takers, and even fewer finishers. That old pot hunter Shunty took the trophy of the Bass Burgee. Keith Thomas showed that perseverance pays, because he won the Flying Enterprise trophy as 1st F15

While we were all drifting the Denwood sisters were on the Great North run – each completed it in 2:49:34. Don’t forget to sponsor them so they can hit their £3k target for West Cumbria Hospice at Home
