May Bank Holiday 2025

The sunshine continues but the temperature eased with the NE wind. Including the Catapult fleet, which joined us again as part of their travel we s trophy series, there was over 40 boats on the water.

The wind was consistent, if only in the way there were major swings of up to 45 degrees throughout the afternoon!

The two Henrys in their RS200 didnt have the best start when their clew outhaul disconnected as they powered up on the start line! After some minutes of trying to balance the boat as they reconnected it they were underway again, only for the same thing to happen. Time to go ashore for a proper fix

The two race series for the Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy was won by Dave/Lynn with two wins. No one else had similar consistency in the conditions with just four points separating the next six positions. Matt/Oliver in their RS200 finished 2nd with 12 points.

As part of the VE day celebrations, there was a bring and eat buffet in the clubhouse and Bongos bingo during the evening.

Sunday was cloudier, and much cooler, with the wind being somewhat stronger than Saturday most of time, though there were various lulls to contend with, and the direction did not shift quite so extremely (well until the final race of the day!). Racing formed part of the weekend series for the F15 Jak Pot, Handicap May Holiday, GP Lyne Tankard, and Mirror Peel Pot trophies.

The gusts that passed through gave some good planing opportunities, but there was only a couple of capsizes.

Three Optimists helmed by novice sailors had some personal coaching to get them around the course successfully.

With an extended six fleet start sequence, fortunately there were no OCS, or general recalls. The Asymmetric fleet had their own windward leeward course, and after counting two of the three races sailed, four boats were within two points, led by Chris/Evie, with Alex/Sakia 2nd, both in RS200s. In the GPs, Dave/Lynn won all three races and lead ahead of Paul/Vicky. Robbie D/Toggle lead the F15s with two wins, followed by Rob/Chris. Ian in his OK also has two wins and leads the handicap fleet, with Jude in an ILCA 6 2nd. James/Poppy in RS Feva lead the slow handicap fleet, with Ian/Toby in a Mirror 2nd.

Bank holiday Monday was overcast and cold, with a NE wind, but it stayed dry! A hard weekend camping, sailing, and celebrating VE day had taken it’s toll on various sailors and the turnout was somewhat reduced. The wind continued to swing, and vary in strength, though not often as dramatically as earlier in the weekend!

There were four Catapults for the final race of their open, and the finishing order matched that of most of the previous five races, with Gareth Ede winning overall, John Terry 2nd and George Evans 3rd.

In the Asymmetric fleet, Chris/Evie added a 2nd to Sunday’s results to maintain their lead and win the series, while some consistent racing by Matt/Oliver pulled them up to 2nd overall. Scumper won the morning race to finish 3rd overall.

Dave/Lynn had a clean sweep in the GPs to win the Lyne Tankard, and AJ/Sue had two second places to finish 2nd overall.

In the F15s, Robbie D/Toggle took another 1st to maintain their lead in the Jak Pot series, and Rob/Chris won the final race to finish 2nd overall.

Ian held his lead in the handicap fleet with another win to take the May Holiday trophy, Rory in a K1 won the last race finishing 2nd overall, and a 2nd for Jonathan in his Devoti D-Zero pulled him up to 3rd overall.

The Fevas had a good day in the slow handicap fleet, with James/Poppy winning overall, Rory/Andrew 2nd, and Grace/Gracie 3rd. The three Optimists helmed by novice sailors continued with their personal coaching, and showed a distinct improvement at the end on the weekend, despite being led astray on the wrong course by their ‘buddies’!

With almost 60 boats on the water, and 35 starts, all of which were clean(!), over the weekend it was a busy weekend for the race management team!

Easter Bank Holiday

This weekend the club hosted a Mirror open alongside club racing resulting in a total of 46 boats on the water. The sun was shining, but there was a cool easterly blowing that put several sailors off racing.

The wind direction struggled to settle, and caused a biased startline, and a general recall for the first start, so the course was repositioned before racing got underway. As well as swinging, the wind strength eased, and varied throughout the afternoon.

In club racing, with varied results, the overall scoring was close at the end of the day, with Dave Lawson sailing a Laser beating Steve/Ruth in an Enterprise, though on equal points.

In the Mirror open, two boats were OCS in the first race but returned. After two general recalls in the second start, the black flag was brought into play to temper the over eagerness! The day’s racing ended with Phil/Lucy Smith and Matthew/Albie McGovern on equal points as well.

More sunshine on Sunday, helping create a katabatic southerly for the first race. More general recalls delayed the race for some fleets and pushed back the finish time by which the wind was starting to veer around Sale Fell to the west which resulted in the patchy airs, and numerous position changes, especially in the F15 fleet which Robin/Mike readily accepted their turn to lead the fleet through the finish line!

After the lunch break the wind had settled to a general westerly direction, though it did back to the SW on various occasions. With time getting on, and the risk of the wind dying completely, the finish line was moved to the top of the main beat so the overall race length was on target, but the finish sequence took more than 30 mins in total.

In the Asymmetric fleet Chris/Evey lead the series from Matt/Oliver, both sailing RS200s. Robin/Mike lead in the F15s from Neil/Rory, Dave/Lynn lead in the GPs from Val/Ken, Steve/Ruth in an Enterprise lead the Handicap fleet from Rob in a Phantom, and Phil/Lucy are leading the MT fleet from Alex/Saskia.

Monday started with light, not very promising, airs that rain clouds threatened to wipe out! Fortunately, the wind filled in from the south, the rain stayed away from the course area, and the asymmetric fleet were able to have a long beat up to Scarness, which they enjoyed for the first lap, though the wind eased for the next lap as the wind started to veer around Sale Fell. Ginger Phil/Chris in their VX One pulled out a good lead only to round the leeward mark the wrong way. It was a while before they noted their mistake, and a longer period before they realised that they hadn’t correctly unwound their mistake!…

For the final race of the series the wind veered to the SW and filled in again. Overall Chris/Evie kept their overnight lead, while Banter/John in the RS400 pulled through to take 2nd place in the Asymmetrics. The GPs did not race so the overnight positions stood with Dave/Lynn winning. A reduced fleet of F15s raced, but the overnight positions were unchanged with Robin/Mike winning, and Neil/Rory 2nd. Steve/Ruth kept the overall lead in the Handicap fleet with Ian in an OK 2nd. The Mirror Tera fleet overall positions remained unchanged with Phil/Lucy winning the club weekend series as well as the open meeting!

Ian/Ted Dobson from HISC took 2nd in the Mirror open, Will/Isabelle Crocker from North Lincs 3rd, and Matthew/Albie McGovern 4th, all three boats having 10 points to count!

Another southerly

Saturday sunshine and a SSW breeze tempted out 11 boats for the first races in the Asymmetric cup and MJM trophy.

In the asymmetric series, John/James showed Neil/Archie a clean pair of heels in both races. All were racing RS400s, and Neil/Archie were still getting to grips with their bigger, light weather, boat but the wind was stronger than anticipated. Also, they didnt aid their cause in the first race when they were caught out by the separate start for the asymmetrics!

The MJM races were led by Neil/Rory in their F15 as was Ian who had teamed with Tim for their first race of the season. In the GPs, AJ/Sue were on top form taking two convincing wins from Val/Ken. The conditions were a bit too strong for Mike/Jack in their Graduate, and they had two DNFs after a capsize in the first race, and filling up in the second.

Latest results

By Sunday morning the wind had swung to the more usual WSW, and freshened slightly, but any warmth from Saturday was just a memory! Fortunately the forecast showers were a no-show.

In the handicap fleet there were three different classes (RS400, F15 and GP14) so there was no close racing, and they only opted to have one race. The race was won by Val/Ken in their GP, but Neil/Archie lead the series.

In the slow handicap Alex/Saskia were sandwiched between Bean/Lucy in a Mirror and Oliver in a Tera in the first race, although they led the next race for a while, Bean took another win and leads the series.

A bad day on the water

is said to be better than a good day in the office. That may be debatable after the winds on Saturday!

The morning started with calm waters but by the time the training started some big squalls had appeared to challenge the sailors.

The wind had eased substantially by the time racing started, but the direction was by no means settled, with 90 degree shifts for the OD to contend with while setting the course. The line was repositioned, and racing got underway, but the fleets had mixed winds and direction throughout the race. Reversing the direction the boats went around the triangular course for the second race wasnt as effective as planned, especially as the wind swung back to the other side of Skiddaw!

The only capsize casualty of the day was Andrew/Oscar in their 29er, though Rory/James in their Feva had several near misses.

On handicap, Neil/Archie sailing their RS200 lead the Barf Trophy with two 1sts, while Alex/Saskia in their Mirror lead the Red Sails trophy with a 1st and a 2nd.

Latest results

Sunday started with very light conditions but, by the time sailors arrived, there was a better than forecast SSW breeze, believed to be a katabatic wind, caused by the cloudless sunny sky, that was expected to disappear soon after noon! Fortunately, the wind stayed, though it did ease as the day went on.

There were sufficient boats to have four fleet starts (only just!) in the morning.

For the pennant race after lunch, it had been hoped that the course would take the fleet around the lake but, with the wind easing, it seemed prudent to keep the course in the bay.

Starter’s Prize 2025

After a wild, and sometimes very wet, preparation day on Saturday, British Summer Time started with bright blue skies, and a blustery, cool, NW wind. The conditions did not put off any of the sailors that had turned up to race.

As forecast, the wind eased through the first race, but picked up again before the lunch break. There were no capsizes by the racers, but Barbra, who had ventured out for her first sail of the season did have an unplanned (if not unexpected) swim.

Rory was trialling his K1, yet again picking a blustery day for a new boat!

On handicap, Alex/Saskia in their Mirror won both races, and were overall winners of the Starter’s Prize. Neil/Archie were relieved to be sailing their RS200 (rather than RS400) in the conditions, and finished 2nd overall, with Rory in his K1 3rd.
