Team Racing at Bassenthwaite

10th/11th October

Last weekend the 10/11th October, Bassenthwaite Sailing Club hosted a Flying Fifteen team racing event. Racing was held as a series of four races over the two days, each result being added together to generate the teams score and determine overall positions.

An Italian evening was arranged for Saturday night, so there may have been some people on auto-pilot on Sunday! Sunday lunch was included in the entry fee.

Bassenthwaite was host to a total of 21 boats, divided into seven teams of three, with visiting teams from Derwent Reservoir, Loch Earn in Scotland, and Bala lake in Wales. Friendly competitiveness was the order of the weekend, without a single protest being made between crews. Weather conditions were fairly consistent, with overcast skies occasionally giving way to heavy showers, and winds NW Force 3 gusting to Force 5 at times.Race 1 on Saturday was led most of the way by Neil Currie, but he was overtaken on the final lap by Howard Green, with Graham Kirkpatrick a close third.

Race 2 was totally dominated by Neil Platt, a new sailor to the Flying Fifteen fleet, normally seen at the helm of GP14s. Second was Dave Gebhard, also a new face in the fleet, from Derwent, and third Bass sailor Scott Beattie.

Race 3 on Sunday was the windiest of the weekend, with some very strong gusts during the first lap; unfortunately this led both to serious gear failure on Neil Platt’s boat and also to the dismasting of William Carruthers boat. William was very philosophical about the breakage and he expects to be afloat again very soon. The race was won by Terry Crumpton of Derwent, with Scott Beattie second, and Neil Currie third.

Race 4 was won by Neil Currie with a clear margin, followed by Howard Green second and John Hardisty third.

Overall team results:

  1. Bassenthwaite 1
  2. Derwent 1
  3. Derwent 2
  4. Bassenthwaite 2
  5. Bala
  6. Loch Earn

The infamous grotty potty was in great contention again. Would it be awarded to Phil Evans for forgetting to return it? Perhaps, it would go to Mike Lyddon for flying his spinnaker up the first beat of race 3! No, it went to Terry Crumpton for abandoning ship on the way to the start – his interim grotty potty was awarded in the form of a ‘Castaway’…..
