Personal Trainer Available?!

With the series results already determined, Rhonwen and Hugh split up and offered their services as personal trainers for the final race of the weekend. While Rhonwen crewed for Graham Ashby, his daughter crewed for Hugh – and guess who came out on top! Yes it was Graham and Rhonwen

As for the rest of the weekend, the weather had been at its most cruel with wind swinging and shifting significantly, but also leaving massive holes for many boats to get dumped in and left behind. One boat that couldn’t be shaken off was Mike Moore, who was sailing in the handicap fleet, and secured two first and a second to win the trophy. His reason for not doing so well in the last race was that he was more relaxed because he had already won the series, the fact that the strengthening winds gave the 400s some spectacular spinnaker reaches may have been closer to the truth. Also, a loose twinning line resulted in Mike being flattened on his final reach.

Again, Roy and Kayla took the trophy for the most capsizes! There seemed to be several bumps and bangs – Roy and Steve, Mike and Scumper, Sam and Mike (and those are the ones I noticed!).

With 26 boats taking to the water over the weekend, all in all it was a gud un! Why not come and join in?

Didn’t She Do Well!

Congratulations to Lesley Braddock on winning the Doctors’ Handicap Trophy at Coniston this weekend. Racing was intermingled with club racing but two firsts and a second were more than enough to secure the trophy in a fleet of nearly twenty boats including RS200s, Osprey, Kestrel 2000, Lasers, Merlin, Albacore, et alMeanwhile back at the club racing resumed, with Robbie D taking another 1st in the Dodd trophy and strengthening his overall lead. Similarly Hugh’s first kept him in pole position

The afternoon pennant was lead by the RS400 with Steve Hunt taking pole position. This win gave Ruth the lead in Sandra’s Salver

Flying 15 Open

Steve and Andy receving trophy from Judith Currie Summer arrived at last? Winds on Saturday led to ideal sailing conditions, but Sunday proved to be more challenging for the OD Neil Currie at least, due to light winds with inbuilt big shifts.Overall the competitors all enjoyed some close, challenging, racing, even though the outcome was not unexpected with Steve Goacher and Andy Tunnicliffe securing three firsts and the open meeting trophy

The Luck of the Irish!

You may recall being given the opportunity to win an RS200, by buying raffle tickets to support West Riding Sailing Club’s fire fund. The first person to come forward was Nigel Lewis – he felt obliged to support the sailing club which his daughter Wendy uses at University. In fact, he felt so obliged that he bought two books. Well it all proved worthwhile, because it was Wendy that won the brand new RS200 – Well done!

Bank Holiday Weekend

Although Saturday started off relatively mild, strong gusts had been passing over the lake all morning. By the time racing started, the rain had moved in and the gusts were coming down vertically and things didn’t improve much apart from the sun coming out later in the day.

Roy and Kayla were still a little anxious about their new boat, and it was well founded! A blustery first beat ended with a capsize that was enought for them to call it a day.

They weren’t the only ones to go swimming; Phil and Rich Hodgkins did their bit for the chandlery trade in the first race, and then Phil took Dave Lawson out for the second race, only to have another capsize and bend the tiller extensions.

As for the racing, Mark and Emma hung on in there in their Enterprise, securing a first and third overall. Scumper and Zefer sailed well in both races, but mistook A for 9 in the second race and had a valiant effort trying to stop capsizing (because they couldn’t lay 9 with the gennaker up) well after the point of no return! Robbie D and Toggle’s performance regained them the lead for the series overall.

The wind continued through the night, as did the partying, but when racing started the wind was a ‘slightly’ steadier westerly. Roy and Kayla were aiming for three marks before capsizing – and they did it!. Roy had a corker of a first beat to be in second position at the windward mark, but he felt obloged to hold his position by flying the kite – problem was with the gusts coming through he couldn’t lay the mark and then struggled to take down the kite – It’s tough at the top! Their tales of woe continued and they had an extra couple of capsizes along the way, however, they weren’t alone – Neil and Bean, Robbie and Toggle, Steve and Ruth, Scumper and Zefer, Phil and Andy T – all joined them. Both Steve and Robbie had to practice their swimming techniques to get back to their boats. It might have been easier to list that stayed upright – William and Lesley, Dave and Lynn, Val and Ken.

Close racing in the RS400 almost led to a demolition derby at a couple of marks, but fortunately everyone came out unscathed.

Monday started off flat calm, but once racing was under way sailors were treated to a variation of shifts and gusts passing through from time tio time that tended to break up the fleets somewhat. In the afternoon, the gusts (when they came) caught out a couple of GPs along the bottom reach, and they kept the rescue crews going by capsizing.

Apart from a heavy shower at the end of the day, the weather wasn’t too bad for a bank holiday!

Quiet Weekend

There may not have been many racing on Saturday, but Roy and Sam’s appearances brought them to the front of the celebrity glass series. Word has it that Sam had a little chuckle to himself (as you do!) when Ian Macpherson capsized – He’ll soon learn that what goes around comes around – Beware Sam!

Sunday started mirrorlike, but the wind filled in after lunch to let the fleet have two back to back races. Mike Fairlamb in his GP was again sailing well, and beat F15 sailor Keith Jamieson on the water and indeed won both races on handicap to take a strong lead in the series

Handicap Open

This weekend we had over boats in three fleets racing on the lake. A brisk, cold north easterly greeted the fleets on Saturday, but the breeze eased before the start, and although boats kept moving, the wind came and went in fits and starts, with gains to be had from the gusts and accompanying shifts.

The 505 class northern area championship, has Jim Blyth from Largo on the same points but just ahead of John Webster from Carsington as the sailors rest with a curry and lager night!

The fast handicap fleet with 19 boats had Richard Smith from Glossop as overnight leader, and the slow handicap fleet, comprising a combination of mirror variations, was being led by Edward Grey from Royal Windermere.

As for tittle tattle, Roy and Kayla had a day of firsts (possibly best to get them out of the way in one go!). Having moved up to the RS400 fleet, not only were they sailing the boat for the first time, but it was their first open in it, and their first (but not only) capsize. Kayla had to do some helming for the first time as Roy tried to catch up with her when she and the boat sailed away after the capsize. Quite a day, but it didn’t stop them going out for more in the second race.

Despite a southerly wind, Sunday was just as cold. The winds had the sailors hanging out up the beats, but off wind planing conditions were sometimes marginal. This was certainly a frustration in the final race which took two fleets on a 35 minute beat to the southern end of the lake, but the wind seemed to lose its punch for the return trip so, again, the off wind legs were not as spectacular as many had hoped for.

All in all, the weekend had some excellent close racing, and all sailors will no doubt sleep well after so much exercise.

Weekend update

The changeable weather continues. A forecast of rain resulted in, at best, a few heavy clouds, but the winds eased by the time racing started, and the sun did its best to provide a hazy glow through the clouds. Robbie D and Toggle sailed consistently to win both races on handicap.

Sunday started mirror-like, and slowly filled in to allow a start shortly after lunch, but the direction and strength wouldn’t settle down such that the conditions would be different each time a leg of the course was sailed..

Mik Chappell in his mirror took the lead from Tim Smith only to lose it to when his spinnaker went under the boat. Neil Currie had mixed fortunes having held a strong lead in the first race to fighting off last position (within the RS400s) in the second. John Halliday took advantage of a shift on the start of the last lap to get through to second position. We won’t SHOUT TOO LOUDLY about him hitting a gybe mark, and he did well to hold his position to the end, but Sam Hall took second position on handicap.

In the GPs Hugh and Rhonwen held off attacks from Mike and Eric.

Y Viva Espana

A Spanish fancy dress evening was held at the club on Sunday. Of course Manuel was there causing havoc….

Sailing has been challenging with unsettled winds all weekend so far. When it did blow there was some good planing, but there were many holes to be buried in. The Catapult fleet enjoyed themselves so much last year they came back for more, so Sunday afternoon they had the treat of a race around the lake! As ever, it was challenging (and that’s being polite!) and that was for the people who should know better. Scott Beattie and John Somerville on their first day’s sailing of the season were difficult to shake off by the RS400s and won both races on handicap.

Monday started off wet, but the drizzle was soon blown away by the blustery winds which caused several capsizes during the day. In fact, the first casualty was a dismasted catapult that had to be towed ashore. The gybe mark was a challenge for many, including Andy and Bean who was under instructions to ‘tickle’ their 49er around mark 6. Whatever that may mean, Bean successfully completed the challenge, but on a later gybe concentration was lost and they ended up capsized with mast in the mud.

The Monday series was the Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy for which the main contenders was the first winner of the trophy Robbie D with Toggle in an RS400, and defending champion Mike Moore with Sally Roberts in a F15 – after the handicaps were calculated that was the order during the lunch break. this meant it was all on the last race. William Carruthers with Lesley Braddock in an RS400 were first to the windward mark and held off Robin for the first lap, until Robin pulled through on the next beat. For the next couple of laps there was some breathtakingly close racing and spectacular spinnaker reaches, but Robin eventually broke away to win the race and the series with William second and Mike third

The catapult visitors enjoyed their weekend, unfortunately I don’t have a copy of the results at present, but here’s Stuart Ede, the winning helm, receiving his trophy from Rhonwen

Tips

Congratulations

Sailing was a little quiet at the club on Saturday due to Mark and Kirsty’s wedding celebrations. Here’s a pic of the happy couple

Of course, hats always come out at weddings, so you won’t be surprised by the following. What we really need to know is what part of the body the ring is for!

Toggle actually owned up to it being a handbag (not a ring) – he’d spent the previous evening searching through the wardrobe for it (well strange things happen after several pints of Jennings!)
