A reasonably calm evening with a Westerly wind.  Jenny chose 9-8-A and 12 boats lined up for the start. It had to happen in the final outing and we had an individual recall as Nigel & Glenys were ocs.

Mark’s 400 with Cameron as crew led after the short windward leg but the helm was keeping an eye on Matthew so he wasn’t really racing. It was, therefore, Rory’s Solo who effectively led from Joan & Jack and Alan & Sue in their GPs.  Then came Paul with a Radial rig.

After several laps the light was fading fast so it was decided to finish John’s Pico on three.  Crews then returned to the Clubhouse where Barbara had a meal prepared for all.

Yet another No Show.  Again wild south westerly gusts were to blame. A few turned up but no one wanted to launch.  The OD didn’t even bother to hoist flags – just told all it was off!

Fantastic day today at the club. As a prelude to the long bank holiday weekend, 16 young sailors took part in Race Training with Curtis Mearns from the RYA. A further 16 youngsters enjoyed “Sail and Splash” with fun and games on the water.

The forecast said Gusting 40.  It wasn’t that extreme but heavy nevertheless.  The OD said there would be a race if members wanted one but the trouble was that people could not make up their minds! Except a couple of newer members who were advised that launching was, perhaps, not a good idea.  So eventually N over A was hoisted.  

A number of crews turned up at the Club hoping that Bass’s winds would be less extreme than around their homes.  But conditions on the Lake were still marginal for racing.  The Sailing Secretary who was the OD consulted all before deciding to cancel racing for the day.

It was probably due to crews wanting to escape from Jon’s boat-moving work party but we got twelve enthusiastic entrants for Night Jar 14. And two were over enthusiastic going OCS and being recalled! Mind you, that didn’t stop them moving back to the front of the fleet by the second leg.

But the wind was all over the place – enough at A where the Bates was anchored but virtually nothing from 0 around 1 and up to B. Andy / Phil had had enough after one lap but John in the Solo and Mike & Eric continued to crawl their way around.

Richard Hughes in his elderly Radial was the first to be shortened after one 30 minute lap. He had put in a stormer (relatively speaking) and was 8 minutes up on Bob’s Full Rig and over 10 on the fellow Radials of Alan Singleton, John Bracegirdle and Barbara Thompson.

Katia’s Tera and James’ Oppy looked as though they were in with a chance on PH at least. But, although they looked painfully slow, the wind picked up marginally for the back markers and those on 2 laps took the leading results. That didn’t stop Mike & Eric accepting a tow back – for the first time in a long while they said!

There was no food for the first Thursday this year. So thanks are due to Andy and a hungry Katia for staying on to produce the results.

With a black sky and thunder & lightning there was doubt as to whether the race would be held.  But the storm missed Bass and twelve boats lined up for the start.

Sue & Alan picked up the port bias and were first away.  Glenys & Nigel were not so lucky and capsized on the line.  Some wag reckoned they needed to cool off on the hottest day of the year!

Mike’s Streaker was first round the windward mark with Peter’s Laser just astern, the helm wishing for a bit more wind.  Then it was Sue / Alan and Ken / Val with Mike’s Solo close astern.  Further back was John in his Pico hanging out as if is life (or stability at least) depended on it!

James and Andrew Reekie in their Oppys were shortened first and then Dave Eva’s Vision, Robert Hedges’ Ent and Barbara Thompson’s Laser all in close company.

After which back in for the meal which was, again, prepared by James & Jenny.

Final results

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Eddie Ramsden on 23 July. Eddie and his wife have been regular visitors to the club over many years, and more recently became members. He was heavily involved with the RYA and regularly brought his expertise into play at club events. He will be sadly missed.

It goes without saying that the family are all desperately sad at this time but take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace.

Our thoughts are with his widow Jean, daughter Judith, and the rest of Eddie’s family at this sad time.

A funeral Service will be held for Eddie at 2.45pm on Wednesday, August 14th 2019, at Mountsett Crematorium, Dipton DH9 9JP.

It is with sadness that we have learned of the death of John Dawson at the age of 98, father of rear commodore Robin.

Many longer standing members will know of John who was an active member for many years, both on and off the water.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his widow Beth, Robin, and families at this sad time.
