Defibrillator Training

To all members and rescue boat crew

There is going to be training for the use of the defibrillator that we now own. The training will be conducted by Ralph Palmer of the Northwest Ambulance Service, it will be held on Saturday 16 March at 10am in the club house and is expected to take 3 hours.

I would like as many people to come as possible and you don’t need to have an up-to date first aid, so if you can come, please let me know by email to peter.ballard2@ntlworld .com by 7 March please.

Many thanks

Peter Ballard
Safety Officer

Helping Hand Needed

With the sailing season a matter of weeks away, it’s time to get prepared. Yes you need to start that winter maintenance on your boat, and hunt out that sailing gear which has mysteriously shrunk through lack of use, but spare a thought for the committee chairs that have to prepare the clubhouse and grounds, a somewhat mammoth task. Those tasks are so much more achievable in bite size chunks, so that’s where your helping hand would be greatly appreciated.

On the weekend 9/10 March working parties are being held at the club to get the club and grounds ready. Please set one, or both, of the days aside to help Alan and Toggle. The more that turn up, the easier it will be. We would much prefer that there are too many helpers (is that possible?) rather than not enough.

Please come down from 11 am and bring your sandwiches. Alan and Toggle will be forever grateful, there’ll be soup and cake to keep your energy up and you’ll go home feeling deservedly righteous!

Please put the dates in your diary, and come down to help out.

Silver Meadows

Silver Meadows AGM is to be held at the Sailing Club on Wednesday 6th March 2013, 7 pm

There will be a guest speaker, Prof. Stephen Maberly who is Head of the Lake Ecosystem Group at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), Lancaster who has agreed to give a talk on what is known about the health of Bassenthwaite Lake as measured by its algae, and other organisms.

It is hoped that by having an interesting speaker they can attract more people to become interested in becoming “Friends” and increasing the bank of volunteers (and donors).

Sailing Club members may also find it interesting as well as the local Angling Cubs, LDNPA etc. and are welcome to attend.

Save the date – Get ready to Push the Boat Out in 2013

20130128-194022.jpgFollowing the huge success of the 2012 Push the Boat Out Day ahead of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the RYA is delighted to announce that Push the Boat Out is back for 2013 – and this time for a whole weekend!

The RYA Push the Boat Out Weekender will take place over the weekend of 18-19 May and will see clubs, centres and marinas across the country opening their doors to their local communities and hosting a Push the Boat Out event. From open days and have a go sessions, to treasure hunts and fun regattas, there will be events for all to enjoy.

We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and spectacle of last years Push the Boat Out Day, said Jon White, RYA Sport Development Manager.

Everyone who got involved commented how much fun they had taking part and running their events. It was great for clubs to show their local communities what they have to offer and to tie in with a national event.

With such overwhelmingly positive feedback, we simply had to do it again. This national event is the perfect opportunity for clubs to hold have a go sessions and to enable people of all ages and abilities to experience why sailing is such a fantastic sport Jon concluded.

With so many people being inspired by the London 2012 Games, the Push the Boat Out Weekender will encourage people to get down to their local sailing venue, have a go themselves and find out just how easy it is to get involved. Its also a great opportunity for regular sailors to get out on the water and to show their support for the sport and the event.

Look out for more information coming soon.
