A glorious weekend was not sufficient to tempt many people back to the water for the Fleet Challenge, but those that turned out were rewarded with good sailing winds. As ever, with all four races to count, consistency won the weekend. Rhonwen Bryce sailing her laser finished first overall with two 1sts and two 2nds, with Jim Christie in a Vortex 2nd overall.

Team Bass Overpower the Scots

The Bassenthwaite GP14 Fleet took a clean sweep of the GP Scottish Area Championships at Annandale. The weather on Saturday was not for the faint hearted and all six Bassenthwaite boats took to the water with enthusiasm. An hour later several had capsized, some more than others, Toggle Cowan was beginning to think that diving was more fun. The winners of the first race were Dave and Lynn Lawson with Rich and Phil Hodgkins coming a credible third in very windy conditions. The second race was postponed as the winds continued to rise above 5 knots.

Sunday was a very different weather pattern, lots of rain and patchy wind throughout the day making sailing difficult for everyone as the wind filled from different directions and then changed direction altogether. Dave and Lynn Lawson won the first race of the day and they continued their winning ways in race three. After a short lunch break and a further drop in the wind racing looked a little doubtful, however after the start of race four the wind filled in and some very competitive racing was underway with the lead and the first six places changing on every leg of the course. Rich and Phil Hodgkins won the race, with five Bass boats in the first six places. As the final race got underway there were still a lot of places to be decided. Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith took an early lead and although Dave and Lynn Lawson sailed a good race they were unable to catch them and Mike and Eric won the race to give Bassenthwaite Sailors a clean sweep.

The Overall results for the Scottish Area Championship were – 1st Dave and Lynn Lawson, 2nd John Telford and Andy Smith, 3rd and winner of the Scottish Junior Cup Rich and Phil Hodgkins, 4th Robin Dawson and Phil Graham. Winner of the Masters prize, Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith. Word has it that Bean and Toggle won the bronze fleet!

Meanwhile, with the above boats away taking a stranglehold of the GP Scottish Area Championships, there were only a few takers at home for the Celebrity Glass Trophy. Not that Saturday’s weather helped. There was some interest before the start and several contenders rigged their boats, but only two actually took to the water – and it was so blustery that they didn’t manage to make the start line! That was enough for OD Ian Preston to abandon racing for the day before the heavens opened.

Sunday morning started damp and cold, but it brightened up as the day went on. Steve Hunt in his RS400 made the most of the reaches to win both races on the water and on handicap. He had some close competition in the second race from John Halliday, but as John was over the line at the start of the race, he had to retire. There was a tie of results between Jim Christie in a Vortex and Roy Blackburn in a Lark which was split in favour of Roy on the result of the second and final race.

Bank holiday

The sailors at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club were not going to let recent events spoil their Easter weekend, as the Club continues to organise great club racing despite the recent theft of the committee boat. The wind was not always the best for racing but everyone enjoyed taking part and it was good to see lots of families taking their children out on boats on Saturday.

This season will see the GP14 fleet continue to build on the success of last season and the club is developing a strong active handicap fleet, offering sailing to all ages and abilities.

In the championship series the results were � Flying Fifteen Easterly Trophy won by Scott Beattie and John Somerville with Ian Campbell and Tony Fisher 2nd. Dave and Lynn Lawson won the GP14 Bass tankard with Robin Dawson and Mike Cowan 2nd. Tim and Rob Smith won the Mirrors Image Trophy and the Handicap fleet Easter Trophy was won by Mark Somerville. This is a promising start to the season, as the GP14 fleet head for the Scottish Area Championship next week we wish them well as John Telford and Andy Smith defend their Championship Trophy and Phil and Rich Hodgkins defend the Junior Scottish Cup.

Every One’s a Winner

Well, is that the way Bean and Toggle intend to tackle this season? Two races (and the first month!) gone, two wins and a series in the bag – what a start for them. There were nine boats racing for the first series of the season, with a good breeze to get them around the course. Bridget got her OD duty out of the way, and threw in a hook finish for good measure. Word has it there was no way they were going back out in the day sailor just to finish the boats on the water! So for the avoidance of doubt, there is only one way to finish, and, apart from being at the front of the fleet, you should cross through the finish line from the direction of the previous mark (don’t worry about rounding final mark in the direction shown on the course board).

Grotty Potty Stakes

The Flying 15 team racing had to wait for the winds to fill in (or was it just for the OD to arrive – perhaps he knew something the sailors didn’t!). From the clubhouse, winds could be seen at the southern end of the lake, but they struggled to make any headway into the northern bay. So the OD set courses to suit. Once started the winds held well and there was some good racing when even Steve Goacher had to work his way through the fleet of 20 boats. The wind shadow caused by spinnakers on some of the dead runs helped shuffle boat positions, and the beats all had shifts/curves that gave opportunities to gain and lose places.

The weighted scoring� system for older boats helped its deviser Ian Preston and team to pull through to second position after three races – pity the didn’t get the last race right. Howard Green had Keels on Wheels on his sail, but sailed more as if he had wheels dragging from his keel!

That said, although there was a few grunts and groans on the water (and that was just aching bodies), everyone had a good weekends racing.

Not quite a Gotcha Oscar, but the winning team from Windermere seem pleased with their lot!

Last year’s Grotty Potty winner, Miles, seemed spoilt for choice as to who should get the coveted award this year. As Miles was unable to accurately read the word PORT emblazoned on John Hardisty’s hull, led to John being awarded the trophy for yet another year

Penultimate Weekend Series

With the onset of Autumn, the nip in the air resulted in a greater use of wooly bears and dry suits despite the winds being unusually light. After a closely fought race in the F15s, in which Scott’s head started to spin after having to do turns for Mike Moore, Saturday’s second race was cancelled due to lack of wind.Sunday morning wasn’t much better for Scott when he tried to squeeze in at the start line but had to do more turns for Ian Campbell. A wind shift at the second mark enabled Wendy Somerville to take the lead from William Carruthers, Ian Campbell took advantage of the situation also, and then passed William and Wendy. Mike Moore wasn’t to miss out on taking the lead when he sailed a fine beat on the following leg. The lead continued to change, and Scott quickly caught up to have his chance at the front of the fleet.� Later in the race Ian Campbell had to do turns for William, a mistake from which he didn’t recover! On the final leg Wendy took advantage of a small wind shift and pipped Scott at the post.

Wendy took an early lead in the final race, only to be passed by Ian. When Ian and Wendy started to round a mark the wrong way, William took advantage of the situation and took the lead through to the end of the race.

All in all some very close racing.

Congratulations to John and Lucy Telford on the belated birth of their first child Jack James.

A poor forecast dampened enthusiasm for the weekend’s sailing, Bridget stresses that she did manage to sail two days in a row though and is lying 4th in the championship.

The Bass Burgee was Sunday’s pennant race, held in a good Southerly that took the fleet to the top of the lake. It may have been a hard slog up, but the reaches back down made it all worthwhile. John Halliday was enjoying one reach so much that he missed out a mark rather than take down his gennaker. Rory Yardley in a Vortex battled against Neil Currie and Toggle in an RS400 upwind, but pulled well away off wind to win on handicap.

24 Hour Race

Did Bridget wet her pants write her speech? Well it was needed, because we did it – after a nerve wracking final two hours (from the remoteness of the website!), in which Bolton kept closing the gap, we won the 24 hour race for the 2nd time with several minutes to spare.

Well done to all our team, and their managers and supporters on an excellent job well done.

The sponsorship from Lloyds Motors of Cockermouth is greatly appreciated. If they can provide us with a boat next year (or a suit of sails will do), so much the better!!!

It’s a tough trophy to defend, but I’m sure we’ll be there again next year.

The Lake District had the best of the weather on Saturday. Some contestants, from as far afield as Penzance, almost aquaplaned through water laden motorways on their way up. Here are a selection of pictures from the first race which saw local helm Pete Lawson take the lead from the end of the first beat through to the finish.

Race two proved devastating for those helms that did not know their port from their starboard, and rounded the windward mark the wrong way (despite there being a lead boat!). Mike Birch won race two following a big lift on the final beat which knocked Pete Lawson down to third.

Glorious blue skies and a terrible forecast for Sunday! Despite some gusts from the South West as the course was being prepared, the Southerly wind held, and increased at times, for the rest of the day. Again, there was some excellent racing throughout the three races of the day. There was the odd capsize (well by Mike Birch to be precise!), and one when the helm fell out of the boat.

The overall winner was Chris Fry from Hallamshire who beat Bass’ Pete Lawson by one point.
