Championship Weekend

Despite being just a week away from the longest day, there was no hint of summer in the weather conditions. The campers on site had a wet, stormy night, with the occasional lightning flash!

Wind strength varied through the morning, and through the afternoon too, mainly due the wind swinging around Sale Fell, and the shadow that it cast over the northern end of the lake.

With other events drawing sailors elsewhere, together with the blustery conditions, the turnout of 23 boats over five fleets was lower than usual. All ten starts during the day were clear. Towards the end of the first race the wind backed more to the south, casting a calm shadow over 0, the windward mark, so there was an element of drifiting for a while before getting back into the stronger conditions which were the cause of some superb planing conditions, and various capsizes to keep the rescue crews busy.

In the asymmetric fleet, Matt/Oliver and Pix/Evie, both in RS200s, are 1st and 2nd respectively overnight. Dave/Lynn won the only GP race from Val/Ken. NeilC in an ILCA 6 leads the handicap fleet from Jonathon in his Devoti D-Zero. In the F15s, tied on points, Andy/Toggle won the last race to split their tie with Neil/Rory. In the slow handicap fleet, Oscar leads ahead of younger brother Rory, both sailing Tera Sports.

On Sunday morning the wind veered to the SW, minimising any effect from Sale Fell, but it continued to swing causing the main beat to be somewhat one-sided at times. As the boats approached the gybe mark 9, gusts would regularly appear, one of which caught out Andy/Toggle in their F15, and they were unable to depower/avoid hitting the mark, so had to do a 360 penalty. Again the gusts caused a few capsizes, and more great planing conditions.

Two races were held before lunch, after which it was only the diehard juniors in Teras that raced, making life easier for stand in starter Felix!

The overnight results remained in the Handicap, GP and F15 fleets, with trophies going to NeilC, Dave/Lynn, and Andy/Toggle respectively.

Matt/Oliver had two more wins in the asymmetric fleet, and won the series with Pix/Evie 2nd. Oscar won the slow handicap series, but Andrew in a Tera had some good results to overtake Rory and finish 2nd overall.

Fleet Challange A 2025

This weekend 17 boats competed in the first fleet challenge series of the year. Weather conditions were similar on both days, with a westerly F1-2 that freshened as the afternoon went on. Some of the gusts enabled great planing conditions, and resulted in a few capsizes.

On handicap, the conditions proved more suitable for the single handers with wins by Rory in his K1, Dave in a ILCA 6, and Olivia in a ILCA 4, while Neil in a ILCA 6 secured three 2nds.

Overall, Dave won with two wins and a 2nd, ahead of Neil, and AJ/Sue in their GP, who retired from the final race, 3rd.

Laser/Solo Open 7 June Cancelled

Bassenthwaite have decided to cancel the planned Laser and Solo open due to low entry numbers.

Club racing will continue as planned in the schedule.

Any visitors that were planning on entering on the day would be more than welcome to sail our standard club racing of two races back to back starting at 1430. Contact John Reekie on the day who is the race officer of the day to get signed in.

Bottoms Up!

Perhaps due to the tale end of half term, or the weather forecast F3 gusting 5, numbers sailing were low on Saturday.

Ginger Phil led the way in his VX One, but a powerful gust on the 2nd lap proved too much and there was a spectacular capsize after which they retired. Rory in his K1 retired after gear failure.

Hugh was in a Solo, and had several capsizes, but keen to take part in the second race. Oliver in a Tera, had the best start, stayed upright, successfully completed the first race. With Hugh capsizing before the next start, Oliver had the line to himself but only sailed the first beat before heading ashore, which was more than Hugh managed as his boat capsized again each time he righted it, and never made it over the start line.

On handicap, Hugh won the first race, with Oliver 2nd. Neil/Archie still lead the series.

Although Sunday’s forecast was similar to Saturday, in reality it was somewhat less blustery, with the occasional shower.

A capsize by Banter/Oscar in RS400 gave the lead to Robin/Toggle in their F15, but they lost considerable ground on the next beat as they retied the genny sheets after they came adrift. On handicap Banter/Oscar won, with Artur in his Aero 2nd, though he presently leads the series.

The Calvert Trust pennant followed, the wind strength picked up for a while, and Banter/Oscar enjoyed some spectacular planing conditions at times, but they could not pull ahead enough from Robin/Toggle who won on handicap. Artur capsized after being caught out by one gust on the beat, but recovered to sail on.

Whit Bank Holiday 2025

As the schools broke up for half term, so did the weather! Rain came in overnight, and the wind built too, though the temperature remained relatively mild. The SW wind made use of Sale Fell to disturb some of the racing area.

Saturday racing was a two race series for the Mark Ninnim Memorial trophy with all classes racing together, so it was a busy start line with 27 boats. A rain shower before racing eased the wind strength for a while, but once underway it increased throughout the afternoon to F4 gusting 5. Although there were a few capsizes in the first race, the increasing wind, and gusts, led to some spectacular reaches, and many more capsizes!

Dave/Caroline in their RS400 won the first race, with Andy/Isabelle in their Mirror 2nd, and Dave in a Laser 3rd. However, rounding the leeward mark the wrong way was Dave/Caroline’s downfall in the next race, and combined with the number of boats falling foul of the increasing gusts, the F15s of Robbie D/Toggle and Rob/TBA were 1st and 2nd respectively in race 2 to finish 2nd and 3rd overall behind winners Andy/Isabelle who took 4th in the 2nd race.

Mark Ninnim Memorial final results

Sunday’s forecast baseline F4 gusting F5-6 at times proved accurate, so it was only some of the hardy asymmetric fleet, and a couple of Teras that considered the 29er a little too risky, that ventured out.

There was plenty of capsizes but hats off to those that stayed upright – Oscar in a Tera, Ian in an OK, and Neil/Archie in RS200. Only three boats took part in the 2nd race, and they all gave up by the 3rd race of the day! Overnight leaders in the asymmetric fleet are Neil/Archie, with Banter/John 2nd, while Oscar leads the slow handicap fleet.

On Monday the wind had eased slightly, and there was a few more racing. Biggest challenge for Pix was – sun cream or rain hat!

With Reekie nursing his sores, Banter reverted to the RS200 with Oscar, and they had some great racing with Pix/Evie, only spoilt by various capsizes – not that they were the only ones to be caught out by some of the slam dunk gusts. Two races back to back enabled an early finish, and avoided the forecast persistent rain showers.

Overall Neil/Archie took the honours in the asymmetric fleet, with Pix/Evie 2nd, and Alex/Ben in their RS400 3rd.

Olivia in ILCA 4 sailed well and won the first race in the handicap fleet but was unable to recover from a capsize before the next start. Dave in ILCA 6 won the next race, and the series.

In the slow handicap fleet, Bean/Oliver had two wins, but James in a Tera sailed well and won the series with three 2nds.

Saturday Sunshine

The sunny weather continues, with a brisk NE breeze, and cloudless skies.

The wind eased slightly before racing got underway, and veered to ENE. The change of course caught Artur out, though daughter Olivia in ILCA 6 had a great debut pulling out almost one minute lead on Neil, also in ILCA 6, in both races. Neil leads the series.

In the GPs Dave/Lynn had two wins, consolidating their lead in the series, with AJ/Sue 2nd

Latest MG etc results

Sunday’s weather was similar, though with more clouds. In the morning, conditions suited Artur in his Aero who beat Rory in a K1 on handicap by just two seconds! Dave/Lynn beat AJ/Sue in the GPs, though Val/Ken still lead the series.

Fortunately this family stayed clear of the racing area

The afternoon race was the Jubilee Sailing Trust pennant, so the course took the fleet down to mark 15. Nothing exceptional on the way down, and Scumper/Neil in a RS400 built up a reasonable lead until they hit some fluky conditions approaching Scarness bay when the fleet started to squeeze up. After that, whatever Scumper did to break away again the wind worked against him putting him to the back on handicap! Dave/Lynn took their 2nd win of the day, with AJ/Sue 2nd

And Then There Were Four

With a better wind in the Scarness narrows, various sailors were keen to make use of it on Saturday in the Asymmetric Cup/MJM series. With clear blue skies, and 20C temperature, the champagne conditions brought out 23 boats.

Though the wind freshened as the course was being determined, it would not last, and faded to a drift by the end of the first race.

James/Jenny were on the port end at the start of the first race, tacked on to port, crossed the fleet and never looked back, securing 1st place ahead of Oliver in his Tera. Ian in his Solo was 3rd.

While waiting for some tail enders to finish, many of the fleet started to head ashore, then the wind filled in sufficiently for most to return to the start area. With the wind remaining fickle a short windward/leeward course was set for the MJM fleet, and a longer one for the asymmetrics.

The wind was light at the start, and the asymmetrics got away cleanly, but with the wind filling in 30 seconds before the MJM start the fleet powered up and all bar four boats were OCS, none of which reacted to the single recall signal!

The wind faded again so one lap was sufficient to bring the race to an early conclusion. By the time the final two Teras finished, the wind had swung through 180 degrees and filled in, the final beat became a run, and William pipped Andrew to the line, winning the race!

In the asymmetrics John/Banter in RS400 won both races ahead of Oscar/James in a 29er, and lead the series.

AJ/Sue lead the MJM series, with Val/Ken 2nd.

Sunday started with more champagne sailing conditions, with the wind blowing from a southerly direction, though the wind strength turned out to be somewhat fickle again. The numbers sailing were reduced, with only two fleets racing.

Over the lunch break the wind seemed to bed in somewhat, and there was an interest in racing around the lake for the afternoon race. With concerns as to whether the wind would hold, and with Andrew racing his Tera in the main handicap fleet, the course was cautiously set to mark 10. This proved somewhat fortuitous, especially as the wind eased after the leaders had passed through Scarness, though it did strengthen again a short while later. When the leaders were back in the bay, the wind started to swing around to the NW, slowing progress, and turning the final reach into a beat for some!

In the GPs, Val/Ken lead the series having won both races, while Julian/Jane and AJ/Sue each had a 2nd and a 3rd.

Leader of the handicap series Banter/John in their RS400 won the morning race but had to make do with a 3rd after lunch when James/Oscar in their 29er stepped up a gear on the downwind leg to finish 1 min ahead on handicap. However, new member Artur in an Aero sailed brilliantly to beat both asymmetrics by over 2 mins on handicap.

Night Jar 1

The sailors of the inaugural night jar of the season were greeted with a light SE which started to die as the sailors were rigging up. This was followed by a SW over the club which held a steady 5-8 knots over the evening.

The race team of James Reekie and Ant set a simple triangle and proceedings got underway. The RS400 of John and Phil stretched into the distance to a dominant win possibly due to the conditions. Last year’s crown holders were second. Rory and Andrew had a good race in the feva after some brotherly jostling with Oscar during which some suspect rules may have been broken but the post race debrief could not apportion blame accurately.

Barbara set up a dinner for the competitors which was well received.

To allow some dinner numbers to be planned and ease its organisation the following WhatsApp group has been created. Participating sailors wanting food are requested to join the above group by pressing the link.

May Bank Holiday 2025

The sunshine continues but the temperature eased with the NE wind. Including the Catapult fleet, which joined us again as part of their travel we s trophy series, there was over 40 boats on the water.

The wind was consistent, if only in the way there were major swings of up to 45 degrees throughout the afternoon!

The two Henrys in their RS200 didnt have the best start when their clew outhaul disconnected as they powered up on the start line! After some minutes of trying to balance the boat as they reconnected it they were underway again, only for the same thing to happen. Time to go ashore for a proper fix

The two race series for the Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy was won by Dave/Lynn with two wins. No one else had similar consistency in the conditions with just four points separating the next six positions. Matt/Oliver in their RS200 finished 2nd with 12 points.

Overall results

As part of the VE day celebrations, there was a bring and eat buffet in the clubhouse and Bongos bingo during the evening.

Sunday was cloudier, and much cooler, with the wind being somewhat stronger than Saturday most of time, though there were various lulls to contend with, and the direction did not shift quite so extremely (well until the final race of the day!). Racing formed part of the weekend series for the F15 Jak Pot, Handicap May Holiday, GP Lyne Tankard, and Mirror Peel Pot trophies.

The gusts that passed through gave some good planing opportunities, but there was only a couple of capsizes.

Three Optimists helmed by novice sailors had some personal coaching to get them around the course successfully.

With an extended six fleet start sequence, fortunately there were no OCS, or general recalls. The Asymmetric fleet had their own windward leeward course, and after counting two of the three races sailed, four boats were within two points, led by Chris/Evie, with Alex/Sakia 2nd, both in RS200s. In the GPs, Dave/Lynn won all three races and lead ahead of Paul/Vicky. Robbie D/Toggle lead the F15s with two wins, followed by Rob/Chris. Ian in his OK also has two wins and leads the handicap fleet, with Jude in an ILCA 6 2nd. James/Poppy in RS Feva lead the slow handicap fleet, with Ian/Toby in a Mirror 2nd.

Bank holiday Monday was overcast and cold, with a NE wind, but it stayed dry! A hard weekend camping, sailing, and celebrating VE day had taken it’s toll on various sailors and the turnout was somewhat reduced. The wind continued to swing, and vary in strength, though not often as dramatically as earlier in the weekend!

There were four Catapults for the final race of their open, and the finishing order matched that of most of the previous five races, with Gareth Ede winning overall, John Terry 2nd and George Evans 3rd.

Catapult TT final results

In the Asymmetric fleet, Chris/Evie added a 2nd to Sunday’s results to maintain their lead and win the series, while some consistent racing by Matt/Oliver pulled them up to 2nd overall. Scumper won the morning race to finish 3rd overall.

Dave/Lynn had a clean sweep in the GPs to win the Lyne Tankard, and AJ/Sue had two second places to finish 2nd overall.

In the F15s, Robbie D/Toggle took another 1st to maintain their lead in the Jak Pot series, and Rob/Chris won the final race to finish 2nd overall.

Ian held his lead in the handicap fleet with another win to take the May Holiday trophy, Rory in a K1 won the last race finishing 2nd overall, and a 2nd for Jonathan in his Devoti D-Zero pulled him up to 3rd overall.

The Fevas had a good day in the slow handicap fleet, with James/Poppy winning overall, Rory/Andrew 2nd, and Grace/Gracie 3rd. The three Optimists helmed by novice sailors continued with their personal coaching, and showed a distinct improvement at the end on the weekend, despite being led astray on the wrong course by their ‘buddies’!

With almost 60 boats on the water, and 35 starts, all of which were clean(!), over the weekend it was a busy weekend for the race management team!
