Yes, you may not have realised it, but the Spring (Cup) has come to an end following an afternoon’s racing in hot, muggy conditions with the added bonus of fair winds if only you could get to them! The morning southerly breeze which all the potential newcomers to the club enjoyed, was challenged and counteracted by an afternoon sea breeze. This conflict continued throughout the afternoon and became more challenging during the second race with the addition of a steady northerly breeze!?
This may sound similar to other summer afternoons, however the three winds co-existed for the duration of the race such that the windward mark (8) was in a south easterly, one of the wings marks (0) was in a south westerly, and the other wing mark (4) and leeward mark (1) enjoyed northerlies! You would be right in thinking that it was challenging for some boats to move between the wind systems. William and Lesley lost substantial ground to the lasers (which seemed to huddle together like a duck with ducklings) whilst manoeuvring between the wind systems. With only two starters in the GPs you’d expect life to be simple, but for some inexplicable reason there was a general recall! Ginge and Jose broke away from Val and Ken only to have their lead swallowed up by the wind conditions, but they did stay ahead and when the results were calculated they realised that the afternoon’s racing had determined the winners of the Spring Cup which turned out to be Ginge with Val second.
Sunday afternoon’s race took the fleet around the lake. The sea breeze seemed to have set in over the lunch break and the fleet generally had a broad reach/dead run in light airs all the way to 12. Neil and Judith Currie broke away slightly, but Rory Yardley in the RS300, being able to take the direct route rather than having to use the broad reaches of the RS400s, wasn’t far behind. The return up the lake was reasonable until 7 when the gaps closed between all boats. At this stage Rory opted for the western shore (not the thing to do as he found) and lost substantial ground. Mike Fairlamb who had been recalled at the start for being over, had taken the lead from Hugh and Rhonwen, but that was lost at 7 when Hugh left Mike floundering looking for wind.
The wind filed in allowing Neil, William and Hugh to finish then it dropped to mirror like conditions. However, on handicap, Hugh was close enough to win by 400secs from Neil
