Paul Carruthers Memorial Trophy 16th September

A bit of a difference from yesterday. There were only nine starters, mainly due to the forecast of heavier winds. Yes, the gusts were stronger and more challenging. Especially in the morning race where Ethans 100 and Neil, sailing a Vision with Barbara, failed to finish. The Fifteens of Mike/Kayla and Angus/Mike H finished ahead on the water but it was Joe who got the win.

After lunch it was Alex/Olivia, first harrying the lead Fifteen and then pulling away to take the race. They hadnt sailed in the morning so it was Joe who had the best cumulative result and took the trophy.

Barts Bash 2018 – What a turnout!

Bass Barts Bash : 15 September 18

A Bit of Bashing

Not physically, but had to match the heading that William composed last week!

The Bash had more competitors than a normal club race but, with many of the top crews not involved, it felt more like a Night Jar round. And the wind was its ever fickle self. Having set a line for 8 as the windward mark it swung 90 degrees to 0 so a new line had to be set and the course re-measured.

Who were the stand-out crews? Well the leaders were Alex & Olivia. They relished the tight kite legs as did AJ & Sue. Nigel & John were well to the fore at one stage but they dropped back mid race while Paul was progressively moving up in his Laser and battling with the Solos of Tony and Stan.

Xanthe went for a brief swim and Barbara a longer one but they both righted and went on to finish. Martin & Alison got lost they said they couldnt find 2 and blamed the organisers for moving it out of position!

Jon decided to throw in a second race. Not sure what it counted for? But it gave a chance for Joe, James & Jenny and Val & Ken a chance to redeem their usual Front of the Fleet positions.

Sad News

It is with great sadness that the club has to announce the passing of one of it’s longest serving members. Caroline Lawson had been a member of the club from the early 60’s and the family have sailed at the club ever since. Carol passed away after recently being diagnosed with cancer.

The funeral took place on Monday 12th March at 1130am at St Mary’s Church, Maryport, followed by burial at Maryport cemetery. Family flowers only, donations to Maryport Inshore Rescue.

RYA North West Junior Traveller Trophy

On Saturday 7 May Bassenthwaite hosted a round of the RYA North West Junior Travellers Trophy.Among the 14 sailors there were visitors from as far afield as Leigh & Lowton. The day was much warmer than recently with sun and a nice North EasterlyF3. There were plenty of shifts and gusts to challenge the competitors, some capsizes, and much good sailing for many.

Harvey Leigh from Leigh & Lowton with Drew Gibbons were first Juniors, giving an impressive display of asymmetric sailing by winning two races in their RS Feva, and even finished 4th in the first race, despite a lengthy capsize. Special prizes were awarded to Pier Pello, Gee Moss & Walter Keegan from Sedbergh School in a 2000, for last finisher who completed all three races. Josh Hunter from Bassenthwaite was awarded the Endeavour prize for cheerfully singing his way around the course despite numerous capsizes. 1st under 14 sailor and 3rd overall was Theo Stewart in his RS Tera Sport. Top Bassenthwaite performers were Hazel Newport (Cockermouth) 2nd in the Junior Fleet in her Laser 4.7, and Ethan Dawson, 1st in the youth fleet in his laser radial.

Night Jar 2

The wind was extremely light last Thursday and it was no different for this second round. There were 13 starters and an X-shaped course 0-9-B-A. The starboard pin was alongside the Bates and Mike & Erics GP were luffed into the Bates. They completed a penalty turn and this dropped them back a little.

It was Johns Skiff which was first round the windward mark with Jim fairly close astern in his Supernova followed by Mike & Eric. Hazel in her Radial was trying different tactics to the rest of the fleet and it was paying off with her moving ahead of Richard in his Solo and the newly launched GP of Katherine & Glenys.

AJ & Sue retired the GP and Steve Peck and Simon Smith the L2000.

After B, it had become a run to A but John took the asymmetric course to keep the Skiffs kite filled and lost ground to the pursuing boats which had taken a direct course. Further down the field Josh kept the Safety Crew active by capsizing his Tera but think he just fancied a swim and some capsize practice!

Then it was in to the restaurant where Neil had prepared a choice of menus and large helpings for all.

Results showed that Mike & Eric had won on FH from Jim. Richard followed in third. Tony collected a 3 for his OD role and leads both series. PH produced a tie for the win between Hazel and Richard with Kath & Glenys taking third.

Current Night Jar series results.

Important info and pics from the Commodore taken earlier today????

Thankfully the flood water has not reached the clubhouse floor but the outbuildings are badly flooded. I’m sure there will be numerous working parties organised when the clean-up operation commences but we must be careful that each area is safe before access is made. Mike Cowan isolated the electricity supplies to most of the outbuildings some days ago. Dave (N) will carry out a survey of the electrical supplies across the site tomorrow (Monday), if the water level recedes, and will isolate all remaining supplies other than those in the clubhouse.
Please do not access outbuildings until the electricity supplies have been a isolated and made safe (remember we now have a 460Volt supply to the site). There will inevitably be damage to equipment and it is very important that we have photographs of any damage for insurance purposes. When any outhouse doors are opened for the first time it’s important that photographs are taken before any equipment is moved. Any damaged equipment must be photographed and retained until such time as the loss adjuster has been to the site and has given us written permission to dispose of any items.
