Saturday 14 October

Saturday morning saw the final training session of the Autumn. Well done to Dave, Sue and Lewis Tyson, Kevin & James Finnegan, Steve & Gill Sharp, Thomas Bainbridge, Max Statter, Martin Parker who all passed Level 1 and to Dave Todhunter who passed Level 2. Shelby Tyson also took part and thinks she is a much better sailor that her mother because she does not get so many bruises! Also in the photo below are Eric Smith, Richard Rhodes and Nigel Lewis who delivered the training and assessment and Bass’s rescue man Josh who is always at the front of any photo!

Autumn’s Over?

Well the Autumn Cup at least! Saturday saw the end of the final long series of the season. In the GP 14s the Autumn Cup was already decided so Hugh & Rhonwen didn’t need to sail and chose to stay in the nice warm clubhouse whilst the others ventured out in windy conditions. Other positions and championship points were up for grabs - Dave Nicholson gaining second and Ginge 3rd overall in the GP14’s.

Steve Hunt won both handicap races to take the Skiddaw trophy, with Ian Macpherson and Tony Flynn the only others to brave both races.

 5 races to count

Sunday was another blustery day but not as windy as expected. It was still windy enough though for Neil Garrison to capsize his catamaran in the first race. He made up for it though in the second race with a first place on personal handicap.

End of the Indian Summer?

Roy Blackburn took the lead on Saturday, well for the greatest number of capsizes. For the first race of the October series, Shunty and Robbie D were a bit too eager at the start and had to return, giving Roy the chance to break free. At the windward mark Roy hoisted the kite, headed for the wrong mark and went for swim No 1!

Race 2 had both Roy and John Halliday swimming (and Roy took great pains to point out they capsized more than once). Robin again pulled away from Steve and won the race, but they they enjoyed it so much they each went for a jolly after the race to take advantage of the excellent reaching conditions.

Sunday’s forecast for wind and rain was wrong! The wind seemed to fill in before racing started and the fleets had a good beat up to mark 7, but by the 2nd beat the wind had eased and the 3rd beat had next to no wind resulting in several retirements and Neil losing a place back to William on the final leg as the wind filled back in. On a positive note Roy didn’t capsize!

Hugh was doing a little coaching with Marty Wright, but Dave and Sarah Nicholson showed the way with a convincing win.

The pennant race in the afternoon was postponed until the wind came back again about 1515hrs, but it was accompanied by further showers and there weren’t that many takers, and even fewer finishers. That old pot hunter Shunty took the trophy of the Bass Burgee. Keith Thomas showed that perseverance pays, because he won the Flying Enterprise trophy as 1st F15

While we were all drifting the Denwood sisters were on the Great North run – each completed it in 2:49:34. Don’t forget to sponsor them so they can hit their 3k target for West Cumbria Hospice at Home

Masquerade

It’s my party and I’ll DANCE if I want to could have been Sally’s motto for her birthday bash – 50? Never. (Well not yet!!). A request for attendees to wear masks resulted in an interesting interpretation by many. Even the Southport cruising visitors, got in the spirit and and brought masks (and Ayatollah Khomeini – or was that a mask?!). The disco kept everyone dancing, including the Bass Stella boys, until late. Jess sang for her mum (and everyone else of course), and whether Toggle was kept away from the the mic, we can but guess…..

Chris Graham

Photo courtesy and copyright of dephoto.co.uk All sailors who have had the misfortune to capsize and require rescue assistance over the last couple of seasons will be aware of rescue boat driver Chris Graham.

It is with great sadness that we learnt of his tragic death in a car accident early on Friday morning. Chris was 19.

Chris’ funeral was held on Friday 1st September in Christ Church, Stricklandgate, Penrith and afterwards at the Conservative Club. Family flowers only. Any donations, via the club please, will be passed on to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue of which Chris’ grandfather was a founder member

Enterprise Champs

Congratulations to Mark Ninnim and Emma Powell following their recent runaway success at the Scottish area championships which were held at Berwick. Four straight wins – what else could anyone wish for? Well done!

Credit Where Credit’s Due

We are delighted to advise that following a nomination by the club, Herb Telford is to be awarded the RYA’s Community Award for Lifetime Commitment.

Over the past 30 years Herb has been on Committee of Cumbria CC Schools Training Centre, a senior member of NSSA Regatta Organising Team in mid 1980s. At club level he was involved with RYA Team Racing at Bass SC in 1977, is a former commodore, been on council and assisted with bar, grounds & jetties, and boats & buoys sub committees. Presently he is most well known as official starter, and is also one of our four trustees.

Herb and his wife Aileen have been invited to receive the award at an official ceremony later in the year.

Congratulations and well done.

Jack Lawson

It with sadness that we have been informed that long time member Jack Lawson passed away peacefully after a long illness. Jack was a highly competitive sailor in both the GP and Flying 15 fleets as well as enjoying skiing and golfing. The service will be held at All Souls, Netherton, Maryport

Our thoughts are with Jack’s wife Carol, his sons Peter and David and their families at this sad time

A Sailor’s Tale

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank a couple of people from your sailing club. I arrived on Saturday afternoon (24/06) to gather some information regarding membership, joining fees etc. I got talking to a lady called Jane Hall & a young fella called Philip Hodgkins. They made me feel very welcome and gave me lots of useful information, including contact names, addresses, telephone numbers & Email addresses.

The Tale – As we continued with our conversation I mentioned to Jane that the last time I had sailed was about 20 years ago, this was during a Royal Engineers sailing course based on the river Weser in Germany. This is where it all begins to go a bit blurry. Before I knew it, Jane & Philip went to the trouble of getting out a club boat (Topper) & rigged it up for me. Jane lent me a pair of wetshoes & that was it! With a wry smile they bid me on my way & all for the measly sum of 3.00. By now the adrenalin had kicked in & I felt like a wasp on speed!! After finally realising that I was afloat it took several minutes for me to realise that I had to do some work to sail this object that I was sat in. I just about managed a few North – South legs & was beginning to feel safe-ish. Not wanting to overdo it I decided to bring the boat back in & watched eagerly for tips as other members drifted in quite calmly & expertly. Being rather impetuous I under estimated my distance from the shore. I promptly lifted the dagger board and jumped straight over the side into what I thought was a couple of feet of water. Imagine my surprise when I felt my private bits under my chin as I wallowed in about 2 metres of Bass!! Just then a slight breeze capsized my craft thanks to me removing the said daggerboard. I was promptly aided by another willing member who re-inserted the daggerboard & righted the boat. Once on terra-firma I thanked all concerned & scuttled away a very embarrassed but chuffed & exhilarated SAILOR Not deterred I shall return – hopefully, if permitted. Once again Many Thanks for a great afternoon.

Best Regards Martin
