For all those attending the Dinner this Saturday, please remember that we’ve planned an early start – 6.30 for 7pm to maximise the dancing time. Any sweeps as to how long the dancing will last?
Annual Prize Giving – Deadline 6 Nov!
The annual prize giving dinner dance will take place at the end of this month. Please make sure that those hotly contested trophies are available to be collected on the night by returning those that you won last year to the club, engraved and polished – the deadline was the end of October!
If you intend to come along to the annual dinner (30th November at the Castle Inn) could you please send your cheques and choices from the attached menu, together with any seating preferences, to Claire Duncan by email ([email protected]), post or in person by 6 November. The price per head is 30 and this includes a live band. We are aiming for a 6.30pm for 7pm start to try to ensure there is two hours dancing time.
If you want to book a room do it quickly to ensure you get the reduced rates!
Night Jar social – Thursday 19 September
With a lack of available cooks over recent weeks for the Night Jar, this Thursday is, unfortunately, no different. Therefore, this week’s planned Night Jar social has been cancelled.
Ben’s Guide to the Rules
Last night’s guide to the rules talk with panel Q&A session was especially well attended last night after Commodore Andy Smith, with a bit of help from Mike Moore (RYA NW area chairman) was able to coerce Olympic Champion Ben Ainslie to make a return visit to the club (His last visit was when Bassenthwaite hosted the Optimist Nationals!).
Despite best efforts, Mike was unable to ask any questions that Ben couldn’t answer with confidence (and accuracy we assume!).
In the Bass tradition, Ben stayed back for a few drinks with the lads. Tog was in his element!
Camping does not seem to be his favourite pastime, but when needs must… So Ben will be around for the rest of the morning.
Wintery Walk
For a change the walk was up Binsey. Neil had the map and planned the route but he managed to lead the Commodore astray when he took a wrong turning while driving to base camp!
The snow tried its best but fortunately held off, and everyone made it safely back to the club for lunch.

Silver Meadows
Silver Meadows AGM is to be held at the Sailing Club on Wednesday 6th March 2013, 7 pm
There will be a guest speaker, Prof. Stephen Maberly who is Head of the Lake Ecosystem Group at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), Lancaster who has agreed to give a talk on what is known about the health of Bassenthwaite Lake as measured by its algae, and other organisms.
It is hoped that by having an interesting speaker they can attract more people to become interested in becoming “Friends” and increasing the bank of volunteers (and donors).
Sailing Club members may also find it interesting as well as the local Angling Cubs, LDNPA etc. and are welcome to attend.
Fancy a leg stretch?
The second winter walk of the close season will take place next Sunday 10 February.
If you would be interested in a longer walk, ending up at the club for lunch with the group setting off at 11am, let Claire Duncan know so that she can plan!
Winter Walk
Clearly many of you had an abstemious New Year not needing to work off over indulgences as there was a select few of about 20 members that opted to take the high route over the renowned Sale Fell, or the low route through to Wythop Mill and Embleton, for the first walk of the year. Afterwards everyone gathered in the clubhouse to devour their sandwiches and a warming cup of tea.
If you are feeling that you missed out, don’t forget that the next walk will be Sunday 10 February when it is likely that there will be a more challenging walk starting early (possibly 9am) venturing up Skiddaw (or somewhere similar), with a less challenging, more family friendly, walk from about 11am with the aim of meeting back at the clubhouse in time for lunch. Keep an eye on the website for further details.

Children’s Christmas Party
After some face painting, and numerous games to try and zap their energy (or perhaps Emma’s!), the kids enjoyed some nibbles. Then Henry announced that he had spotted Santa coming in on the water who had landed in Dubwath bay and hitched a lift from a rescue boat.
Santa then popped into the club, encouraged the merry throng to sing some Christmas songs, before handing out some selection boxes, and rushing off to his next appointment.

Santa’s on his way
Just a quick reminder that the Children’s party is being held on Sunday afternoon from about 3pm.
There will be a various games, some carol singing, and Santa is expected to pop in.
Please bring sandwiches/snacks for a bring and eat buffet for the children, but there’s bound to be a few nibbles left for the adults no doubt.
