WLYC 24hr Race

Better known as Southport 24 hr race, it is a fantastic event that Bassenthwaite sailors have a long history of participation, twice winning and numerous top ten positions. For those that don’t know the format, teams sailing either GPs, Enterprises, Fireflys or Larks circumnavigate Southport Marine Lake for 24hrs, helms & crews change over during the period, trying to complete as many laps as possible. We have not entered a team for a few years but we have this year.

What do we need to compete?
1. A boat – a successful campaign requires a club member to lend their boat to the club, can you help?
2. A team – in previous years we have competed to win, if we could do the same this year that would be great but it appears some of our superstars may be unavailable. Another option would be a less experienced team but one that could savour the excitement of the event as representatives of our Club.

Can you all to give it some thought and let Jon Denwood know firstly if you are willing to lend your boat, GP or Enterprise, and secondly if you would be interested in taking part?

This years event is over the weekend of 13/14th September.

Bass Week Children’s Activities

I am doing a crafty children’s activity for one morning during Bass Week and I need lots of scraps of fabric to cut up. Please check out your wardrobes to see if you have any old shirts, blouses, tea shirts, jeans, etc. (bright colours would be great) and bring them along to the club this weekend. It will give me a chance to start cutting out what I require. If anyone has an extra pair of pinking shears and an hour to spare to help out that would be really appreciated.

Many thanks, Judith.

Fun Weekend

A weekend to ourselves, no visitors, no scheduled racing, just camping on site, team games, fun in Toppers, barbeque, and rain showers thrown in.

Here’s some pics of the rounders match (which went ahead on Tog’s new grass! – perhaps it’ll repair before Bass Week…), and the Topper challenge (a video will be prepared some time in the future).

[lg_slideshow folder=”album/14sundry/Fun weekend” display=”slide”]
Several bags of charcoal were more than enough to overcome the evening showers that threatened the barbeque – there were several sets of glowing (and singed?) knuckles shared between the generally male chefs before Claire’s bingo got underway, with some novel calling. Mark N took the prize first line, and Judith K the overall prize despite daughter Andrea making numerous iffy claims earlier…

Sunday started withsome practicing of gate starts forthe GP fleet beforefor the forthcoming Worlds. Shunty opted to show the way in the first start by skimming the transom of pathfinder Dave/Lynn only to narrowly avoid being wiped out by son Chris in the Gate boat! A couple of starts later and helms were more in tune with the procedure.Inthe afternoona one-off race in memory of Pete Ballard, from which donations will be given to the Samaritans. The course took the fleet down to 14, which on the western side of the lake was slightly in the shade of Sale Fell and led to some wallowing, especially by Shunty/Ruth who lost a good lead while the asymmetrics planed to windward of them.Overall, it was the GPs that took the honours, led by Dave/Lynn, ahead of Bean/Alan in a F15, and then Val/Ken.

There was slight embarrassment when someone mistakenly sailed the Commodore’s boat believing it to be a club boat! Intriguingly Sazzle started in a Laser Radial and finished in a Topper – how did she do that?!

Final results

A short prize giving was held with prizes awarded by Commodore’s daughter Katia

All in all a fantastic weekend with a difference.

Night Jar 12

This weeks Night Jar was held in ideal sailing conditions with blue skies, warmth and a F2 NW wind. Twenty four boats signed on and the number would have been higher had not the majority of the Topper Fleet been away on school trips.

The OD set a compact figure of eight course 0-9-B-A. With a long start line and port end bias, there were many crews vying for space at the outer end but no one was over at the start signal. The GPs of Mike Fairlamb / Eric Smith, Dave & Lynn Lawson, and Alan Jones / Sue Watson got away well as did Joan & Jack Hardie in their RS200 and Jim Christies Surpernova.

With lap times of around eleven minutes for the lead boats and a gap opening after the first group, Dave, Joan, Mike and Jim were let through for a fourth lap. With the wind strength appearing to drop, the course was then shortened and AJ and Neil in his Laser felt this would benefit them as the first lead competitors to finish.

But then the wind filled in again and Joan beat Dave to the line in an extremely close strategic contest at the completion of their fourth lap.

Another excellent meal greeted competitors once they had packed their boats away, although it was such a lovely evening that some were reluctant to retreat to the clubhouse.

Weekend Pursuits

With many members taking part in The Lord Birkett open meeting at Ullswater this weekend, club racing was slightly quieter than usual and started with another race in the Celebrity Glass pursuit series. Pam and Mik got away keenly, but the slightly blustery conditions caught Pam out at the windward mark and she capsized while tacking round, leaving Mik to take the lead. The GPs proved to be the strongest competition and, although Mike/Eric had a good lead, taking the right hand side of the beat turned out to be the wrong side as John/Nigel took the left side, wiping out Mike’s lead, before moving on to wipe out Mik’s lead too!

Ian/Lezli-Ann and Ian/Elaine had some close encounters, firstly on the start line when Ian C was forced over and had to return, through to the finish when Ian M was in the lead until crossing the line in a dead heat.

In the 2nd race both F15s had some spinnaker problems, though Ian C came off best and held the lead through to the finish

The Toppers had a good turnout and surrounded Mik, but Mik won on handicap from David and Jenny. Mike/Eric held off Alan/Sue to take another win and the current lead in the series.

In the handicap fleet Jim won in his Supernova ahead of Terry in a Laser, maintaining his lead in the series

Sunday started off with light zephyrs crossing the lake, and AJ asked for it to be sorted. By the time racing started the wind had filled in! However, it did ease towards the end of the race which slowed down proceedings a little. Hazel’s persistence in her Topper helped her maintain her lead in the MIrror/Topper series – well done!

Latest results

As soon as most boats had finished the wind returned, and held for the afternoon race which, unusually, was a pennant race in aid of the Jubilee Sailing Trust but held as pursuit on a fleet handicap basis.

Pam, in her Mirror, led the fleet down the lake to 10, but not having seen next mark 15 kept on going. Unfortunately she had noted the missing mark before the OD who sent the rescue crews to advise boats to use 7 in lieu of missing 15, so she lost out on the extensive lead that she had. Jim opted not to use his H12 and raced in his Supernova, concentrating intensely to secure a lead (that wife Ann couldn’t believe!) which he maintained to the finish. The following four boats, though some minutes behind, were all closely grouped. A couple of Lasers lost their way, missed out a mark, and subsequently retired.

OD Nigel had a barrage of claims that, if the race hadn’t been shortened, their boats would have been taken ashore and wheeled around mark 15, which presently lies in the back camping field, on their trollies. Not certain that Tog would have approved, and there being no formal protests, the results stood.

Jubilee Sailing Trust results

As for the Boats that travelled to Ullswater for The Lord Birkett Trophy, congratulations to Mike and Kayla who finished 10th overall, and 1st F15 despite the changeable wind conditions

Sad News

Longer standing members will be sad to learn of the recent passing of former F15 sailor Jim Sampson who was a member in the 1980s & 90s

Jim’s funeral is to be held at 2.30pm on Wednesday 16 July in Wetheral Church. Our thoughts are with his wife Pat and family.

Night Jar 11

With a SSW force 4 wind blowing and 15 boats competing, having two fully crewed rescue boats on the water was essential. There were numerous capsizes and six retirements. Richard Broughton and Peter Winfindale went synchronised swimming and pulled out of the race as did Joan & Jack Hardie who had ended up with mast in mud.

The course was 0-4-2 which gave a long beat followed by broad and tight reaches. The sting was in the tail as a very tight rounding of 2 was essential to cross the line inside the starboard end pin and a tack meant a beat up the biased line without actually crossing it. This left a number of competitors pinching and loosing time by ending up head to wind.

Trevor Morton in the Dart found the stronger conditions to his liking finishing second on the water to the Skiff and winning on PH. The GPs of Mike & Eric and AJ & Sue were next up, the former winning on FH and the latter coming second in both series.

The Toppers handled the conditions superbly with only one of the five starters retiring. Hazel Newport finished fourth on PH and sixth on FH while Rosie Hogg was seventh in both series.

After numerous masts had been cleaned of mud it was inside for another excellent meal, provided on this occasion by Neil.

Weekend Series

While Chris and Julie headed south to spend the day in Wimbledon No 1 court, and were delighted that the forecast rain held off, as well as witnessing the surprise defeat of No 1 seed Serena Williams, club racing comprised a weekend championship series, in bright but cool airs.

The shifting wind made course setting challenging, but a cunning plan was devised to cater for more shifts while still maintaining a second beat. While some of the fleets expressed their disappointment (ie whinged!) at enduring a JC style fetch, others did have to beat on each of the windward legs.

The wind was light for the first lap, but picked up again for the rest of the race. Challenging conditions led to various place changes and some close racing not that the consistency in the results particularly show this.

The wind swung to the north for the 2nd race, but half way through it swung to the east and eased again, providing testing conditions and more close racing.

After two races there is a strong overnight with two 1sts for Graham/Elaine in the F15s, Mike/Eric in the GPs, and Pam in the Mirrors/Toppers. In the handicap fleet the position is somewhat closer with Ian, Scumper, Jim and Robbie D all on five points!

While Sazzle got to grips with her newly acquired Laser, Gary was getting his first taste of helming in a F15 with Kayla. Well done to both of you, and we look forward to seeing you both on the water again in the near future.

Sunday’s weather was very similar to Saturday’s, a light and variable easterly wind with numerous holes. Simon ditched his regular crew in the flying fifteens and took Kaylas out and despite missing Y/Z he corrected himself and won from Ian and Lel. Val and Ken also missed Y/Z and retired in the GP14s leaving victory for Mike/Eric from Alan and Sue. Ian Hall continued his good form and won he handicap race from Robin and Phil. Commodore Andy and daughter Lily won the Mirror race from Mik who managed to hold off Pam. During the lunch break the Bates was taken off the water for its long overdue refurbishments and the fleet took to the water for race 4 in even lighter conditions. Graham and Elaine won the flying fifteen race and the series, Mike and Eric made it a double for the Fairlamb family winning the GP14 race and series. Pam was back to winning ways in the Mirrors also claiming the series and Mark and Phil won the handicap race from Ian whose second place clinched the series. The wind died away to nothing and the sailors voted with their feet and came ashore rather than sail a 5th race, the race officer duly abandoned it and the wind picked up again.

Bass Week Trophies

With Bass Week just a month away it’s time to hunt out those coveted trophies that you deservedly won last year, give them a polish, and return to the club in plenty of time for presentation to this year’s winners (hopefully you’ll be there to defend your position!)

You can bring them with you, but there’s often not enough room in the car by the time you’ve packed your kitchen sink…

Thank you in anticipation, we look forward to seeing you back again this year
