Catapult Open

Another blustery, but dry, day for the final race of the Catapult open. The gusts did catch out one of the catapults which resulted in their first capsize of the weekend.

They were warned!

The poor weather forecast was right! Wind and torrential rain at times. Several capsizes (Shunty, Scumper, Sam Hall, John Halliday, Toggle, etc) and some good reaches to make up for it.

The afternoon race for club sailors was the Albert Bates Retirement Trophy – a pennant race that typically takes the fleet around the lake. As the wind was from a SW direction, the course can be challenging past Scarness, so the OD asked the Catapults whether or not they wanted to risk spoiling a good race, but they were up for it!

The first few legs in the main bay were in extremely blustery conditions and resulted in numerous capsizes both on the beat and at gybe marks (and it thinned the fleet out a little!). Scarness seemed top be particularly sheltered and boats were drifting for a short while trying to catch the wind. However, once they broke through, all the fleet had to contend with was the gusts!

Robbie D (who had been late for the start), Shunty, and Scumper (also, a late starter) were all relatively close as they rounded 13 to head back up the lake, but Robin took the East shore and carried more gusts while Steve took the West shore. So it was Robbie D and Toggle that crossed the line first (in Roy’s RS400), and won overall on fleet handicap – Are the boys back in town (as Toggle put it)? – No was the resounding comment from Scumper

The Catapults may well have regretted the option of going around the lake, as tacking whilst drifting seems to prove difficult for them! At least it would give them a brief rest before the next set of gusts!

Saturday

In addition to club racing the Catapult Association are holding an open meeting over the weekend with a fleet of 10 boats.

The wind was a little shy at first, but the OD went down to Scarness (where the committee and rescue boat crews spotted the osprey doing a bit of fishing 100m away!), set a line to beat back up to six and the wind duly filled in from the South. A quick repositioning of the committee boat (which meant the line was in fact back to front, but only Mike Moore noticed and stuck his oar in about that!) led to a good sail down part way down the lake in a good breeze. Despite the wind seemingly being in a true direction, Shunty reported some challenging shifts (or did he just get it wrong?) that resulted in some close racing.

The start for the second race was moved into the main bay to avoid the fleets getting stuck down the lake if the wind faded. The line was set for a Southerly breeze, and just as the start sequence was about to commence the wind started to fill from the SW. Again the line was hurriedly moved for a beat to 0, and the fleets started with a fetch to 0, but the swinging wind did result in boats having to tack (phew!). Not an ideal course, but time was getting on, and the risk of the wind fading continued to increase.

Fortunately the wind held long enough to finish the race.

Phil Hodgkins celebrated his 21st later in the evening – champagne and caviar! What did you all miss? Well there were some not too embarrassing photos of his early years, tales of how Bridget gave birth to him after a little ‘back ache’, plentisome buffet, birthday cake with loads of candles (possibly 21?), a thank you speech (no tears were openly shed!), loads of chatting and drinking (no doubt a few sore heads to follow), and a good time was had by all.

Flying Fifteen (not quite) Team Racing

Due to a multitude of reasons, the normal 20+ entries for this event did not materialise and the team racing was cancelled in favour of straight racing, but for those who did turn out, what a glorious two days of sailing. The sun was out all weekend and the wind was a southerly force 3-5. On Saturday, the elite sailors gave the rest of the fleet a 3 minute head start and they all headed to the south end of the lake where Robbie Dawson & Toggle from Bass held the lead going round the windward mark. They were only overtaken halfway back down the lake when Neil Platt with Richard Rigg (Bolton & West Kirby) managed to get past them and win the race. Keith Jamieson & Maf Smith (Bass) were holding off the other boats, but lost places when they ran aground. The second race was held in the bay, but this time no-one got near Robbie & Toggle. Keith was also holding off the fleet until a last minute change of wind strength and direction allowed some of the other boats to catch up and pip him on the line.

Sunday again saw a race to the south end of the lake, but this time all the boats set off together. By the time they reached buoy 12 it looked like Neil has the race sown up – but this is Bass! The wind favoured those at the back of the fleet and they all came round buoy 6 more or less together. Neil and Adrian Tattersall with Tim Smart (RYA) then took each other high on the reach down to buoy 2, allowing Howard Green & Ian Preston (Leigh & Lowton) to get through into the lead. There was some tight covering up the next beat, but Howard then overshot the windward mark and dropped back to third. He nearly took back a place coming to the finish line, but Adrian beat him by a foot. After more than an hours sailing, all boats finished within a minute of each other

In the final race, the OD again took advantage of the southerly breeze, but this time only sent the boats half way down the lake. Neil took the lead, but the others were not far behind – Adrian and Howard were less than 10 seconds behind at the end. Robin and Keith had their own match racing competition with Keith managing to come home first.

Tinker Weekend

While the Tinker fleet held one of their annual rallies at Bass, some of our RS fleet ventured to Ullswater for their RS open. Robbie D and Toggle came out best from the competitive (if small) fleet. Counting four results from five races sailed they won with 6 points (inc 3 1sts) from local helm Neil ? who also had 6 points. Scumper and Zefer were 3rd and William and Lesley 4th. A busy, frustrating, (the 400s started behind and had to sail through the fleet of 28 RS200s) but enjoyable day’s racing.

Sunday – A glorious day for sailing – a true southerly and sunshine. Club fleets endured an asymmetric windward leeward course (good for the asymmetrics, but Rhonwen wasn’t impressed in her laser!) and were home and well through their lunch before the tinkers finished their race.

The breeze eased a little for the afternoon, but the course that Shunty set BEFORE coming ashore for lunch didn’t prove to be the best thing since sliced bread (The best leg was from the finish to the shore!). Robbie D couldn’t stay away from the water and took out the Topaz with Ethan. Old habits die hard, and the sail ended with a capsize, but Toggle was nowhere to be seen!

The tinkers’ travellers trophy went, as ever to David Warren. Malcolm Ellwood was 2nd and Dennis Aldred 3rd

2 Up Trophy for the season went to Stewart and Barbara Warren, and the most improved helm was Nigel Marshall

David Warren receiving his trophy from Vice Commodore and OD for the weekend, Steve Hunt

GP14 Open

Thursday night, Night Jar A finished last week. Overall winner was Mike Turner and Sue Watson in a GP. Mike had done two OD duties during the series, but only needed to count one to win. Ginge was second. Alex Hill (Laser) was third overall and wins the laser/handicap trophy. Tim Smith wins the mirrors and Keith Thomas the Flying Fifteens. In all 44 helms took part over 10 races (two races were abandoned before they were started due to high winds).

16 boats turned out for this weekend’s GP open. Although the winds were very light there was enough for two races each day – the third race on Sunday was not started. Beautiful sunshine and we all enjoyed the view whilst waiting for the wind. Very close racing through all parts of the fleet and after the first two races, Telf, Ian Dobson and Dave Lawson were all on 4 points. In the third race, Neil Platt then went and threw a spanner in the works by winning (old habits die hard!). Places changing up every beat and a few deft over-taking manoeuvres downwind. Telf managed to hold on to the lead in the fourth race to win overall. Hugh & Rhonwen were winners of the silver fleet and Mandy Mitchell with Jon Close from Winsford Flash won the Bronze fleet. First time for a long time that a quarter of the fleet had lady helms.

Handicap Open

This weekend we had over boats in three fleets racing on the lake. A brisk, cold north easterly greeted the fleets on Saturday, but the breeze eased before the start, and although boats kept moving, the wind came and went in fits and starts, with gains to be had from the gusts and accompanying shifts.

The 505 class northern area championship, has Jim Blyth from Largo on the same points but just ahead of John Webster from Carsington as the sailors rest with a curry and lager night!

The fast handicap fleet with 19 boats had Richard Smith from Glossop as overnight leader, and the slow handicap fleet, comprising a combination of mirror variations, was being led by Edward Grey from Royal Windermere.

As for tittle tattle, Roy and Kayla had a day of firsts (possibly best to get them out of the way in one go!). Having moved up to the RS400 fleet, not only were they sailing the boat for the first time, but it was their first open in it, and their first (but not only) capsize. Kayla had to do some helming for the first time as Roy tried to catch up with her when she and the boat sailed away after the capsize. Quite a day, but it didn’t stop them going out for more in the second race.

Despite a southerly wind, Sunday was just as cold. The winds had the sailors hanging out up the beats, but off wind planing conditions were sometimes marginal. This was certainly a frustration in the final race which took two fleets on a 35 minute beat to the southern end of the lake, but the wind seemed to lose its punch for the return trip so, again, the off wind legs were not as spectacular as many had hoped for.

All in all, the weekend had some excellent close racing, and all sailors will no doubt sleep well after so much exercise.

Grotty Potty Stakes

The flying fifteen team racing had a fleet of 20 boats competing for the Viking Trophy. If only last year’s winner, that forgetful president, had remembered to return the trophy! Saturday had much close racing, (even if Steve Goacher and Phil Evans did stand in as lead boat for the weekend yet again!), and the eagerness to start resulted in a few general recalls, but no black flags. Hugh Godfrey, the stand-in official starter tried to get into the Grotty Potty stakes by being distracted at a crucial moment (no it’s not what you think – the OD wouldn’t allow it!) and forgot to blow his horn.

Sunday’s conditions were much more blustery, and with the wind from the south-west, gusts wrapping around Sale Fell made tacking in mark 9 ‘interesting’. The conditions did result in several boats being flattened, and one even managed to get a mast stuck in the mud (that shouldn’t happen with such a big lump of iron under the boat). Keith Thomas and Andrea Preston’s antics resulted in their boat being renamed the green submarine.

The final results show there was a good mix of performance over the weekend, and it was Derwentitis that are this year’s victors.

Last year’s winner of the Grotty Potty had the pleasure of nominating and awarding the potty to this year’s contenders. Apart from Ian Preston who had forgotten the trophy, Steve nominated Alan Robinson’s crew, Carl Whitehill, for falling out of the boat in the final race and causing his team to drop from 2nd to 3rd overall (in favour of Steve’s team). But it was to be the crew that had to retie a spinnaker, but managed to do so after wrapping the sheet several times around the shroud – who could it have been other than Steve’s crew Phil Evans. We understand he won’t be doing that again.

Didn’t he do Admirally!

I know it should say admirably, but since Tim Chittenden won the weekend series, it seemed more appropriate. With the tinker association having a travellers meeting of 22boats,and many members away at theSouthport24 hour race, there was only a few takers for the club racing. Mike Fairlamb sailed a couple of races in a laser, one in a GP, and the final one he crewed in a GP. Other Sunday takers included Neil and Judith, William and Lesley,Royand Kayla, and Leila and Sue. However, as Tim had sailed all four races, the Tinker Trophy goes to him!

The club can hold their heads high again after another good result in the 24 hour race when the finished 5th overall. Although Hugh’s boat was packed away and on the road in record time, no one’s quite certain when he’ll get back to the club – perhaps he’s stopped for a sleep!?

Apart from some heavy rain on Saturday evening, the Tinker Association had another excellent event with 22 boats taking part. Yet again David Warren took the trophy with Dennis Aldred2nd ,and John & Val Allen 3rd

Brain Cell on Offer!

At Ullswater YC’s RS open meeting on Saturday, three members ventured down to brave some strong winds only to sit in the eye of the storm all day. The wind came and went from time to time, and the short races meant that, generally, it was important to get it right at an early stage. Scumper and T had a couple of good results, and several runins(wait a while longer for those tales!), but it was Robbie D and Toggle that came out on top to finish third overall. Scumper was 5th, and William and Lesley 8th.

As for Scumper, his first run in was with the steamer – it appeared from nowhere and stopped just in front of him, so Scumper cut in close behind its stern, and just as the blue rinse brigade were taking photos of the Scumper and T, the captain powered up to full steam ahead, pushed Scumper 15 yards away and then he was sucked back in by the wash! In what was to be the final race, the wind had filled in from behind and as boats rounded the leeward mark for the finish, a mass of RS200s came in as well. One boat decided it wanted water on Scumper, but it didn’t have it, and Scumper wasn’t going to give it which all lead to a bit of verbals, and a comment was overheard later that the crew was going to offer a brain cell for Scumper and T to share! Little did they know the expertise they were up against – the winner of the 2000 LordBirkett.

Meanwhile at the club, they had more than their fair share of wind, but therewasonly two takers – Sam Hall, and Stu and Debbie Spence. Sunday was slightly busier, but there was a lack of wind! However, it did fill in and another four races were held in this quick fire series of eight races. Sunday’s results were headed by the RS200, but it was Sam Hall that took the trophy.

GP14 Open Meeting 9th/10th July

1st clear start on Saturday!
Bean and Toggle protecting their winning positionMike Fairlamb and Eric Smith show the way in race 2

The sun shone, and despite the high pressure system, the wind filled in for a strong fleet of 21 boats for this weekend’s open meeting.

Sailors were so keen that for each race it was a case of third time lucky, as there were two general recalls, and it was only the round the ends rule that seemed to hold boats back behind the line.

In the first race Phil Smith and Mike Cowan (Bean and Toggle) made it to the windward mark first, and broke away only to be passed later in the race by Dave and Lynn Lawson. However, on the final run before the finish, Dave and Lynn gybed in front of Bean and then had to do a 720 enabling Bean to take the lead which he carefully protected up the final beat.

When the fleet got away on the second race, Bean, and sailing secretary Hugh Godfrey were the only boats over the line which threatened to scupper their chances. However, a split shift up the first beat meant there was some interesting positions at the windward mark – Mike Fairlamb with Eric Smith took the lead, Hugh had managed to pull back to fourth, while Bean was 20th! Visitor Martin Brennan from Hollingworth succeeded in taking the lead and won the race, while Bean managed to pull back to 6th. Consistent sailing by Dave Lawson left him in pole position overnight.

It was to be a beautiful Summer’s evening, with a mirror flat calm. Perhaps the heat was getting to some, but there appeared to be some Arabs and Turkish Delights wandering around the club house during the evening! It could have been something to be worried about with recent events in London, but in this case it was due to Michaela, our social secretary, arranging an Arabian Night.

Sadly, the belly dancing never got off the ground (a belly flop?!) – maybe just as well as there would have been some interesting images to portray!

Sunday morning came (and went) with very little wind, so an early lunch was had by all. When racing set off in the afternoon, it seemed as if the sea breeze was starting to kick in, but as all the boats cleared the line (no general recalls), the wind veered back to the North and left some marks without any wind. Dave and Lynn Lawson took an early lead, and seemed invincible, but that changed on the next main beat and they dropped several places. With the wind fading, and another race to get in, the OD hurriedly shortened the course, but the wind picked up and with the final leg turning into a run, it was to be a testing time for the OD as the leading six boats finished within a couple of boat lengths of each other.

The wind faded again, and swung, then swung back, and as time passed, the OD decided to call it a day. Of course, the sea breeze finally started to take effect – ah well.

So with two first in the bag, Bean and Toggle took the winners trophy, and runners up were Martin Brennan of Hollingworth, then Dave and Lynn Lawson.
