Test Drive a RS400

Do you want to try out an RS400 for the first time or know someone who does?

RS Sailing are kindly providing an RS400 DEMO BOAT for 2019 and it’s coming to the North first!!

It will be at Leigh & Lowton SC (LLSC) from 9th Feb so come and try out the boat at LLSC’s legendary Tipsy Icicle Series and come and talk to the other 400 sailors.

Following the Winter Champs at LLSC on 23/24th March, the boat will be winging its way to Bassenthwaite SC for the GNAC on 13/14 April and will be there until 22nd April, after which it will continue on its UK-wide tour.

Contact Dave Exley to book a slot.

Foxy Tales 2019

Its that time of year again folks. The time when we ask for contributions to the new edition of Foxy Tales. Last year, saw a record response in terms of the number of contributors and pieces submitted, something we would like to equal or exceed in the coming edition.

So this request is for as much copy, if not more, than last year. So what can I write about this time you might ask? As previously I would suggest; reflections on sailing last year or further in the past, your plans for the coming season, thoughts on how the Club is progressing and, perhaps, what new initiatives you would like to see?

But dont limit articles to Bass Let us know what you have been up to when not on the Lake? Out of season or onshore activities? And we used to have adverts, quizzes, crosswords, recipes or whatever although these have been absent of late. And, if at all possible, please send an accompanying photo or two. As someone once said A picture is worth a thousand words!

I admit that I was apprehensive when we went digital but it has definitely stirred up the enthusiasm of members to get involved. William has worked wonders in getting past editions loaded to our website, sometimes from thumbed hard copy. If you want to view whats there click on the Membership tab and select Foxy Tales Members Magazine. But dont click on it instead move right to the Year column and drop down to the one you want to view first. Theres a lot of Club history at your fingertips!

To allow time to compile This Years edition contributions are needed by 14th February (we stick with that date as its an easy one to remember!). Although Robin will compile digitally, please send bits and pictures to me as the co-ordinator. I would prefer it to be emailed – although typed copy and even hand written stuff will do. But please get it done and send it as soon as you can.

Many thanks,

Mik

Swallows and Amazons

You may recall that two, or was it three, years ago several junior members secured the opportunity to put their sailing skills to good use as extras in a remake of a film based on the classic children’s book Swallows and Amazons. Also, past member Peter Lawson brought down, and raced, the two boats during Bass Week.

If you missed it when first aired, there’s another opportunity on Saturday 15 Dec 18 on BBC2 at 1700hrs

Sad News

It is with great sadness that we have learned that Herb Telford died peacefully on 29 November.

We were pleased that he attended the annual prize giving on Saturday to receive the much deserved Consistency Trophy

Herb has been a big part of the club over the 40 or so years he has been a member, having taken on roles on house committee, bar, vice-Commodore, Commodore and more recently (well for the last 20+ years) official starter. He was the first club member to be bestowed with the RYA’s lifetime commitment award, clearly well deserved.

He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all.

Our thoughts are with Aileen, Lel, John and their families

Herb’s funeral was on Monday 10th December at St Peter’s church, Kells, Whitehaven followed by a cremation at Distington, and a funeral tea at Whitehaven golf club.

Family flowers only, donations in lieu in aid of The Salvation Army

Aileen and family wish to say a big thank you for the wonderful cards and comments received about Herb and thank everyone who attended the funeral. They greatly appreciated it all.

There has been an approach from a rowing club to make use of the club’s facilities, and the parish council are interested in exploring use of some of our land as part of a pedestrian route linking from Dubwath to Ouse Bridge. Council will consider the requests when better information is to hand.

Robin thanked everyone for all the help he had received during his Commodoreship, wished Naomi well in the role, and closed the meeting at 3.30pm

Annual Dinner

2018 annual prize giving and dinner dance was held at the Crown Hotel, Wetheral and attended by 90 members and their guests. Commodore Robin Dawson gave a brief resume of the season before presenting the trophies.

Vice Commodore Naomi Smith thanked Robin for his efforts over his two years as Commodore and presented him with a photo
