Up and Coming Star!?

What’s that all about – something to do with Christmas? Not quite.

Who could it be? You guessed it, none other than our own Sam Hall won the Up and Coming Star award at the recent Cumbria Youth Sports awards. Many congratulations to Sam!

RYA Regatta

There was a Mini Regatta at Derwentwater on 22 October which was an adventure what with the strong winds and freezing temperatures! The kids did really well just to go out and most seemed to love the experience and are hoping for more of these events next year.I am very pleased to report that our Bass boy JAMES SPRINGELL beat the rather cocky Keswickians in the only race sailing a battered Pico!

Thank You!

Would you please convey a very big thank you to all those people who worked so hard yesterday moving boats to safety and moved flying fifteens to a normally safe area but after a massive rise in lake levelsome people havethen moved all the flying fifteens again this morningasthe lake was so unbelievably high.

A very special thanks to the rescue boat lads as yesterday even the toughest members had gone home wet ,tired and cold they kept on moving boats and equipment in pouring rain and even launched a rescue boat and went out to the Bates and did a job on that in an absolute gale. Thanks lads.

I don’t know just who was there but Daphne Beck, Mike Chappell, Mike Turner, Alan Nicholson John Prestridge were some of the people I saw when I arrived late afternoon but a big thank you to all who helped it was very much appreciated by all the members.

More Water!

The water has continued to rise. All the boats have been recovered from the lake. The wind is picking up. The club is almost marooned. There’s little chance of sailing. Snow is on its way. But hey, it’s November next week – try again then!

Toggle was amazed that Joanie had found out how and managed to turn on her mobile. Little did he realise she was just checking where his life policy was. Just as well, because despite the poor conditions the pot hunters were out for one race – the Bass Burgee pennant, and of course Toggle was one of them, along with Scumper and Bean. No idea who won, but it wasn’t Tog 🙁

As you can see, the lake had risen even more overnight. As all boats have been moved to higher ground, but have not been tied down, perhaps this is an excuse to remove your boat from site earlier than usual this year, especially if you don’t intend to sail during November. Many people did take advantage of the nice morning to pack their boats away

Sshhh! Don't tell anyone we left the taps on to fill the pond (looking towards the gate)More like Bass Weel!If the boats had been put away facing forward it would have been so much easier to launch them!

Whatever Floats Your Boat! Now you see them – Friday

Now you see them - FridayNow you don't - SaturdayPlease be aware that the heavy wind and rain has topped up the lake and the water is lapping under various boats (including mine!), and some have been blown over. It may be advisable to check or move it, especially as high winds are forecast for SaturdayWell a big thank you to those that worked through the evening to rescue numerous boats and move them to high ground. It may still be worth checking your boat though, as the boats have not been able to be tied down to any ground anchors

Super Sal’s a Gran!

I know you can’t believe that she’s old enough, but Sally Roberts has just become a grandma! Her first(!) grandchild was born recently and weighed in at 7lb 6oz and is called Isabella Jayne, a daughter for Sally’s eldest son Sam, and his wife Theresa. Congratulations.

As promised a photo now that Sal’s come down from cloud 9 (not by much though!)

Sunday Sun

Tog's in the prizes! The forecast wasn’t for much wind and it was right – the lake looked glorious. Shame it was mirror like. Perhaps the slight breeze at the southern end would work its way into the northern bay. Then again…..The wind came, and went, and came back in again from about the forecast westerly direction and racing got underway about 1pm after some glorious sunshine. As the race went on the wind strengthened slightly such that the afternoon was strong enough to sit out and plane at times. There was even the odd capsize – Robbie D capsized when he got his life jacket caught on the boom!

The GPs result was determined on the last race – a win by Mike Fairlamb and Tim Knowles gave him first overall ahead of Val and Ken Bell

Scumper’s two firsts from Saturday, plus a third for being OD kept him at the top of the handicap series from William and Cristina

All in all a pleasant weekend’s sailing

Two boats went to the RS Inlands at Rutland – Andy and Emma Smith’s best result was 5th coming 24th overall, Phil and Naomi had a 9th and finished 51st overall in a fleet of 78

Rory Yardley finished 7th in the RS Vareos while Toggle finished 11th overall in a fleet of 17 boats
