Weekend Sailing 9/10 June

This weekend’s championship series got off to a great start with a steady westerly breeze which gave rise to some good planing conditions. Simon/Jon led the way in the F15s in both races with Mike/Kayla chasing and Ian/Lezli-Ann challenging from time to time. While Ian managed to hit his head (yet again) before racing, an unexpected gybe when sailing by the lee, didn’t do Lezli-Ann’s back any favours.

Ethan had a keen start in the first Topper race, leaving Harry in irons on the start line. He did give Harry a chance to catch up when he went round the wrong mark and then had to back track for several hundred yards. However, he kept his lead and won the race. A few too many capsizes by Harry slowed him down but he finished the race before returning to shore somewhat tired.

In the handicap fleet, the Vareos led the fleet, though Tim/Martin, with no competition in the GPs, sailed well finishing 2nd behind Robbie D in the 1st race and winning the 2nd race with Ian Macpherson 2nd. In the 2nd race, the wind freshened and Robbie D had to work hard to beat Banter Phil who was sailing well in the conditions, though Robin made the most of Banter Phil’s mistakes, and capsizes, to regain the lead after losing out on the beats.

Early Sunday morning there was little breeze on the lake, and the forecast was somewhat ominous, but by the time racing started there was a light westerly to power the fleet around the course. However, that was not to be until there had been various dramas on the shore. One Ian poked his eye and went off to casualty while another needed an urgent intake of Mars bars, but that caused Elaine to pull a muscle rushing for it! At least that was three events in a row.

Whether that put Ian off it can’t be certain, but he wasn’t able to put up a strong fight against Mike/Kayla who took two firsts and the series trophy.

As there were three GPs, but not enough to race yesterday, the Commodore’s Prize would was be based on two races. Nigel and his new crew had some close racing with Alan/Sue and they each had a win, but as Alan won the 2nd race the tie was split in his favour and he won the series.

There was a good turnout in the handicap fleet, and the lighter airs suited Robbie D a lot more than on Saturday such that he won both races on the water, but the conditions suited Joan/Jack in their RS200 more as they won both races on handicap. However, as Joan had only sailed two races, Robin’s 2nd places were sufficient to secure him the series trophy.

Sunday

The initial forecast of wind and rain seemed to be correct, and as the boats prepared for the race the wind seemed to pick up. However, once the racing was under way the stronger gusts had eased and the sailors had to contend with shifts being dependant on where the gusts were coming from. 30 mins into the race and the wind faded almost completely as a northerly breeze tried to fight with the easterly that had prevailed until then. At lunchtime the wind seemed to have settled down, but there’s plenty of time for things to change before the next race…. Would Neil and Judith venture out? They did untie the cover but after a bit of pondering of the gusts passing through, retied it and gave up for the day.

Well the race did ease by the time the 2nd race started, however, just after the lead boats rounded the windward mark the first squall came in, and that sent Shunty for a swim allowing William past, but with the wind gusting William had to drop the gennaker for the gybe mark. Scumper having had to return to shore to re-rig the gennaker again was fortunate that the race sequence had been postponed, made best use of Toggle’s weight and held the gennaker to the gybe mark to take the lead which he maintained for the full race.

The gusts did come and go, but when they were there everyone had to be on their guard as massive shifts were encountered on the beat, and all they could do off wind was bear away and enjoy!

The wind seemed to increase even more before the final race of the day (only to ease at the top of the beat!). When the fleet was out of the shade of the shore the wind was certainly there in force and there were some spectacular reaches that everyone survived.

In the GPs Dave Lawson was sailing with Ken Bell and won both races from Mike Fairlamb and Sally Roberts. Scumper and Toggle led the handicap fleet but there were strong challenges from Robbie D with Matty Fairlamb in an RS200. The standard of racing has been very high and positions seem to be dependant on being in the right place to get the wind, as well as making less mistakes than the other competitors.

With strong on-shore winds, returning to shore after the race was spectacular at times as the boats had little steerage due to raised centreboards and rudders. Sam Hall was quoted as demonstrated ‘an interesting way’ of stopping his boat. Jo Hardie ended up in the reeds (sshhh – don’t tell the National Park) after a capsize. John Halliday had to make several attempts to get ashore safely as he tried to cope with some unplanned gybes, but Shunty was there (waist deep) to lend a helping hand

One last race for the Graduates tomorrow, but two more for the club boats – will the forecast prove right again? If so there’ll be some tired people tomorrow evening!

They were warned!

The poor weather forecast was right! Wind and torrential rain at times. Several capsizes (Shunty, Scumper, Sam Hall, John Halliday, Toggle, etc) and some good reaches to make up for it.

The afternoon race for club sailors was the Albert Bates Retirement Trophy – a pennant race that typically takes the fleet around the lake. As the wind was from a SW direction, the course can be challenging past Scarness, so the OD asked the Catapults whether or not they wanted to risk spoiling a good race, but they were up for it!

The first few legs in the main bay were in extremely blustery conditions and resulted in numerous capsizes both on the beat and at gybe marks (and it thinned the fleet out a little!). Scarness seemed top be particularly sheltered and boats were drifting for a short while trying to catch the wind. However, once they broke through, all the fleet had to contend with was the gusts!

Robbie D (who had been late for the start), Shunty, and Scumper (also, a late starter) were all relatively close as they rounded 13 to head back up the lake, but Robin took the East shore and carried more gusts while Steve took the West shore. So it was Robbie D and Toggle that crossed the line first (in Roy’s RS400), and won overall on fleet handicap – Are the boys back in town (as Toggle put it)? – No was the resounding comment from Scumper

The Catapults may well have regretted the option of going around the lake, as tacking whilst drifting seems to prove difficult for them! At least it would give them a brief rest before the next set of gusts!

Saturday

In addition to club racing the Catapult Association are holding an open meeting over the weekend with a fleet of 10 boats.

The wind was a little shy at first, but the OD went down to Scarness (where the committee and rescue boat crews spotted the osprey doing a bit of fishing 100m away!), set a line to beat back up to six and the wind duly filled in from the South. A quick repositioning of the committee boat (which meant the line was in fact back to front, but only Mike Moore noticed and stuck his oar in about that!) led to a good sail down part way down the lake in a good breeze. Despite the wind seemingly being in a true direction, Shunty reported some challenging shifts (or did he just get it wrong?) that resulted in some close racing.

The start for the second race was moved into the main bay to avoid the fleets getting stuck down the lake if the wind faded. The line was set for a Southerly breeze, and just as the start sequence was about to commence the wind started to fill from the SW. Again the line was hurriedly moved for a beat to 0, and the fleets started with a fetch to 0, but the swinging wind did result in boats having to tack (phew!). Not an ideal course, but time was getting on, and the risk of the wind fading continued to increase.

Fortunately the wind held long enough to finish the race.

Phil Hodgkins celebrated his 21st later in the evening – champagne and caviar! What did you all miss? Well there were some not too embarrassing photos of his early years, tales of how Bridget gave birth to him after a little ‘back ache’, plentisome buffet, birthday cake with loads of candles (possibly 21?), a thank you speech (no tears were openly shed!), loads of chatting and drinking (no doubt a few sore heads to follow), and a good time was had by all.

Weekend Update

This weekend was a little quieter due to Andy Smith & Co venturing to Edinburgh for his stag night. Andy did take his passport with him, but he obviously didn’t realise that there is no passport control to cross the Scottish border (even the Welsh charge to cross the Severn bridge!). 30 people went up there, and it’s certain that most will return before the wedding.

Rhonwen’s comments regarding Saturday’s courses were less than positive – However, it was explained that the courses were set for the changeable wind, it’s just that the wind didn’t change!

Mike Chappell misjudged the depth of water when going up the lake on Sunday afternoon, and came to a sudden halt as he hit some rocks. Unfortunately, he split the centreboard casing during this unplanned manoeuvre.

The sun has shone all weekend which has suited the well attended training event hosted by Nigel Lewis, with a lot of help from daughter Wendy, and John Crosbie. Despite the variable wind conditions there were many successes including 5 RYA level 2s, 1 RYA level 1, and 1 Junior level 2

Summer Come Early?

A bit of balmy weather this weekend. Loads of sunshine, but the wind was somewhat lacking on Saturday. In the first race Shunty, with Tim Chittenden crewing, kept breaking away and then being caught again. On the final run before beating up to the finish Herb warned Steve to mind the anchor warp – Tim lifted the centreboard, but the warp caught on his rudder bringing him to a sudden stop, sufficient enough for William and Elaine to take the lead. On handicap though, Dave and Lynn Lawson took the honours in their GP.

The second race had even less wind and less partakers, and again the honours went to Dave and Lynn.

Sunday started with the lake like a mirror, but the wind started to fill in just after 1130 allowing the racing to get underway before lunch. Scumper was a bit too eager, and responded with an innocent ‘was that me?’ when he heard the second recall signal. After returning through the line, he had a good beat to be third behind Shunty and John Halliday at the windward mark, and eventually broke through to second.

Mike Fairlamb had a good race and stayed ahead of Dave Lawson until he headed for the wrong mark (could it be an age thing?).

The sea breeze topped up the wind strength in the afternoon, and resulted in a couple of capsizes. Toggle survived the gusts on the first reach to 3, but not the second time around! This slowed him just enough for Mik Chappel to beat him on handicap. The wind suited the RS400s with Shunty and Scumper coming in ahead of Mike Moore.

Mike Fairlamb led the way ahead of Dave Lawson until the final beat to the finish when Dave broke through (Could be that age thing again!?). Special mention for Bridget and Ginge who sailed two races in one day – some time since that happened!

Just see what you’ve been missing out on – come down and make the most of this Summer weather as you never know how long it will last

Easter Series

After a gentle breeze on Saturday, Sunday proved to be a lot more challenging. The handicap fleet was expanded by the full compliment of RS200s, and they all had some close racing and several capsizes. Robbie D was again involved in the capsize of one of his competitors (the Hardies), although this time he didn’t try to skewer them!

The wind picked up in the afternoon, leading to more capsizes – the RS200s all had their fair share, but Paul Burnell and Sam Hall were the only RS400 to go in (x3 or was it x4?). Shunty retired when his kicker broke just as he was having another close race with Scumper and Andy T. Neil and Judith hung on in (almost literally) to keep ahead of William and Toggle who had pipped them at the post in the morning race.

It was good to have four F15s on the water – Scott seemed to be struggling with the first beats but soon got back into the pace to win both races. Dave and Lynn Lawson sailed well again to take both races, but why Lynn ended up hanging on to the bow as they came ashore we may never know!

The traditional Easter egg dump was held on Sunday after racing, and it was quite fitting that the winner was Jack Lawson, grandson of the original organiser of the competition, Jack Lawson, who sadly died last year.

Another breezy day saw a change in crews for some so that they could make the most of the conditions. The Hardies again had to clean the lake mud from their mast head after another capsize. But racing was good even though the same names appeared on the leader board – Scott, Dave and Tim – all of whom have won their respective series with three straight wins. In the handicap fleet, Bean and Naomi in an RS200 worked there way up to get 2nd on handicap pushing Shunty down to 3rd position. As Scumper had two firsts and a second, Shunty couldn’t match this even by taking the last race, so the series went to Scumper and Andy T/Zefer.

The wind eased a little for the final afternoon race, but there was still some good gusts to create exciting planing conditions at times.

All in all a busy bank holiday weekend, with good racing and reasonable, dry, weather.

Rich Critchley’s been doing some happy snapping again, and here’s a couple to whet your appetite. The rest can be found here in the Easter 07 directory

Easter Fun and Games

First of all there was the merry go rounds – both the Commodore and his Vice had a go on this one. In the first race, the Celebrity Glass pursuit, Dave Nicholson decided to do some turns after hitting Eric Smith on the head (with his boom!). In the second race Steve Hunt did a couple of pirouettes for Scumper after hitting him as they rounded the mark.

Secondly, there was the jousting competition (or it may have been cooking related) which took place later in the same race. In this one Robbie D, reaching with the gennaker up, failed to skewer Alan Nicholson (fortunately) but Alan was knocked out of his Vareo as he was beating up a separate leg of the course. Apart from a bent pole, and no doubt a big bruise, no real harm was done. Both boats capsized as a result – not to take the glory from Roy who regularly gets a mention for capsizing (even when he hasn’t capsized, or so he claims), but he wasn’t sailing!

Championship is Finalised

On Saturday, sun and rain with the wind forcing its way either side of Sale Fell provided some interesting conditions for the final weekend series of the season. Robbie D in an RS400 had super lightweight crew Ethan on board and quickly pulled into the lead, never looking back. The GPs were led by Dave and Lynn Lawson, and the most exciting bit for the rescue crews was when Dave and Sarah Nicholson capsized (photos to be revealed!)

The forecast for Sunday was miserable, and when the sailors arrived it looked as if it was to be right – it was raining cats and dogs, the wind was blowing away from the clubhouse so that no-one could tell how windy it really was! Lynn Lawson seemed to be leading the way in terms of being positive about going sailing, while everyone else continued to watch the rain and contemplate. But the OD was convinced that there would be some starters if he ventured out to set a line, so he did. Of course, he was right. The sailors casually got changed to avoid getting wet rigging their boats (what are sailors like?), and set out for the start. The conditions were nothing like that expected. The patches of black water rarely had enough power to enable planing conditions. In the handicap fleet, Scumper (with Robbie D crewing) banged a corner on the right hand side of the course, and reached the windward mark with William and Lesley closely on his tail. The unusual conditions enabled William to pass to leeward of Scumper and take the lead until the penultimate beat (when the water was flattened by a downpour) when Scumper was lifted just sufficiently to get round the mark ahead of William. Both boats went their separate ways on the next run, but Scumper kept the lead when he had water on William. With a final 100 yds to the finish William immediately tacked off on to port. One final tack into the finish line and William crossed the line inches ahead.

The GPs were lead around the course by Dave and Lynn, with Mike and Eric second

After a lunchtime hearing about Herb’s speeding fine, several boats called it a day (not because of Herb!) as the wind had surprisingly continued to ease.

Weekend Series

On Sunday, the forecast wind came in and created many thrills and spills. Roy was quick to point out that his capsizes in the morning didn’t count – the first was before the start, and the second, during the race, was on purpose to avoid a collision. So for the afternoon was he going to make up for it? Another capsize before the start did not count (so he says), but the one (could have been more) during the race did. Ah well, practice makes perfect?!

It seems that many others were practicing as well. Neil Currie with Sam Hall crewing went swimming in the first race and in the second race they went trawling (followed by another capsize later on). Don’t know how many others capsized, but according to Gary on one of the rescue boats, they were playing bingo with each boat that capsized – he just needed William and Lesley to go in for a full house. No such luck there then!

Andy and Bean were due to sail the Yellow Peril’s (new nickname?) F15, but the dancing, or was it the Stella, took its toll and they weren’t quite ready for the morning race. They did make an appearance in the afternoon race, but only in the baby Bates on rescue cover (or perhaps just taking some snaps of the boats)

The strong winds, apart from proving hard work in the hour long races, did have many spectacular reaches to make it all worthwhile.

Monday’s forecast was for more wind, but things didn’t look promising at 11:15 when the heavens opened and there was a monsoon like downpour. However, it passed through and the wind seemed light until just after the start when the true north westerly started to hit home. As with Sunday, there were some scary spinnaker legs, and the beats were hard work, but there weren’t so many capsizes (was that because Roy didn’t venture out?! :). Instead of Joe falling out, it was Scumper’s turn this time, and he had to practice front crawl to get back towards the quickly disappearing boat! Neil bravely fended off Scumper by luffing him high on the penultimate mark only to be caught tacking in Scumper’s water as he rounded the mark resulting in a 720 penalty, and losing a place.

The GPs series was won, after close racing, by Dave and Lynn from Hugh and Rhonwen with three bullets.

After lunch the winds increased even more, and there was some more close racing in the handicap fleet, especially between Robbie D and Scumper, but it was Robbie who won the race and the series.

In the FF fleet, Mike Moore with a nervous birthday girl (well almost) crewing, had four straight wins, and a blown out spinnaker, over Keith Thomas who had coaxed Graham Kirkpatrick from retirement to crew on one of the windiest days of the season!

The Smith family had a fleet of their own for the final race of the weekend, when they took out five toppers. Brotherly love didn’t stop Bean having to do turns after the start. Emma recovered well from one near capsize, but not the second!

The cruising fleet from Southport seemed to enjoy their weekend, and some of them took part in the racing, some of whom got to know the rescue crews very well! Perhaps they’ll be back for more next year?

Frustration in the Sun

Everyone should have been delighted that there was a weekend of sun with a warm wind, but for the sailors the biggest frustration was that the wind was by no means steady. The first race on Saturday had boats beating on three of the four legs. Neil Currie had taken an early lead with William not too far behind, but on the only leg that wasn’t a beat the others caught up and there was several place changes. Neil had to settle for a second to Robbie D, while William ended up fifth behind Steve and Scumper. While waiting between races several sailors opted to cool off by trying some barefoot water skiing (not easy at 2-3 knots from an RS!). When Toggle tried, he lost his balance and catapulted backwards into the water.

Sunday’s racing was around the lake – with a north westerly it was never going to be an easy race, but challenging was an understatement. There were gusts, and holes, and shifts, and down draughts. After 50 mins Steve Hunt was first to mark 13 some 20-30m ahead of William, by mark 12 he was 5 mins ahead and the GPs and Mike Moore in his F15 were all mulling around. The wind started to settle down for the beat back up the lake but Steve lost a lot of ground finishing just 2.5 mins ahead of William. Unfortunately the others were still in easy reach of the finish and the race was won by Dave Lawson with Mike Fairlamb crewing

Pot Hunters Clean Up!

With the summer on its last legs (or so it seemed), the hot balmy days of the past week were a bit of a distant memory asthe the air cooled and the weather front moved in from Ireland bringing blustery wind and rain.

The handicap fleet were a little too eager for the start (or was the line so biased?) that there were two general recalls much to the dismay of the lasers who were all being good and staying behind the line. In several instances throughout the racing the leaders came a cropper to the gusting winds and ended up capsized – First Scumper, then Neil, then Shunty, and off course Toggle doesn’t like to miss out so Robbie D ended up in the water as well! With no other GPs to sail against, Hugh sailed in the handicap fleet, stayed upright and on the tails of the RS and of course won! The second race was similarly windy – William took the right side of the first beat and the lead, and broke away until the next beat. Shunty went for another swim and an early finish, Robbie D who had earlier sussed the wind conditions and advised Herb not to use mark A, ended up capsizing at A with his gennaker up (and also took an early exit from the race. Neil trawled his kite on the final 50 m leg to the finish and let William back through but it was Hugh that again took the honours on handicap

Toddy and Ron Lee braved the elements again in their Mirrors but found it a bit too challenging. However, at least they tried. Well done

The strong winds forecast for Sunday must have passed through overnight, and although the sun tried to break through, it was drizzly most of the morning race. The handicap fleet saw some extremely close racing with four RS400s each taking turns at the front. Andy T tried to slow Scumper down by somersaulting out of the boat on a spinnaker reach. Not content with doing it once, he got back in the boat, bent down and fell out again!

Hugh had competition in the GPs and from the Ashby’s for the morning at least, so the win on a single race was sufficient for him to take his first trophy of the weekend – the Macmillan Cup

With no GPs for the afternoon, Hugh rejoined the handicap fleet, secured a third position and his second trophy – the Grisedale Cup.

As Toggle had no helm for the day, he took out the mirror in the hope of cleaning up, but he was no match for Mik Chappell who took the Round Table Tankard with two straight wins.

Spring is Over

Yes, you may not have realised it, but the Spring (Cup) has come to an end following an afternoon’s racing in hot, muggy conditions with the added bonus of fair winds if only you could get to them! The morning southerly breeze which all the potential newcomers to the club enjoyed, was challenged and counteracted by an afternoon sea breeze. This conflict continued throughout the afternoon and became more challenging during the second race with the addition of a steady northerly breeze!?

This may sound similar to other summer afternoons, however the three winds co-existed for the duration of the race such that the windward mark (8) was in a south easterly, one of the wings marks (0) was in a south westerly, and the other wing mark (4) and leeward mark (1) enjoyed northerlies! You would be right in thinking that it was challenging for some boats to move between the wind systems. William and Lesley lost substantial ground to the lasers (which seemed to huddle together like a duck with ducklings) whilst manoeuvring between the wind systems. With only two starters in the GPs you’d expect life to be simple, but for some inexplicable reason there was a general recall! Ginge and Jose broke away from Val and Ken only to have their lead swallowed up by the wind conditions, but they did stay ahead and when the results were calculated they realised that the afternoon’s racing had determined the winners of the Spring Cup which turned out to be Ginge with Val second.

Sunday afternoon’s race took the fleet around the lake. The sea breeze seemed to have set in over the lunch break and the fleet generally had a broad reach/dead run in light airs all the way to 12. Neil and Judith Currie broke away slightly, but Rory Yardley in the RS300, being able to take the direct route rather than having to use the broad reaches of the RS400s, wasn’t far behind. The return up the lake was reasonable until 7 when the gaps closed between all boats. At this stage Rory opted for the western shore (not the thing to do as he found) and lost substantial ground. Mike Fairlamb who had been recalled at the start for being over, had taken the lead from Hugh and Rhonwen, but that was lost at 7 when Hugh left Mike floundering looking for wind.

The wind filed in allowing Neil, William and Hugh to finish then it dropped to mirror like conditions. However, on handicap, Hugh was close enough to win by 400secs from Neil
