Let Us Know Your Thoughts

With over a month since Bass Week came to an end you should have had time to recover by now! We have sent out emails to most entrants that gave us their details so they can give us some feedback. If you were there could you spare 5 minutes to complete the online questionnaire so that we can take views into account when preparing for next year’s regatta. As a bit of encouragement, there will be a 25 Bass Week voucher for the 25th, 50th and 75th completed form received. However, you are welcome to submit the form anonymously if you so wish. For being quick off the mark, Rich Critchley will get a free cocktail for sending the first form. (Sorry Judith – beaten this year!) Many thanks for being part of this year’s event, and we hope you enjoyed it enough to tell your friends and come back next year! If you didn’t enjoy it, then please tell us! Very best wishes for the rest of the sailing season.

RNLI Flower Quiz

Quite a lot of people returned their RNLI quiz papers which were being sold during Bass Week and everyone had done really well. There were quite a few who tied with 95/100. Our own sailing club member Carol Thomas had 97 but the winner, with a total of 98, was Mrs J Kelly of Ennerdale Avenue Workington. She will receive 25.

A profit of 86 has been sent to the RNLI Workington station. Click for the questions and answers

Thank You

To all at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club

I would like to thank you on behalf of the charity, Sail 4 Cancer, for your brilliant support during Bass Week. I have returned from holiday to read that the Trident Ladies held a raffle during your regatta to launch their North East Sailing Charity Ball 2010 and that you managed to raise a wonderful 406.45. We are very grateful for your generosity.

As you may be aware, these funds will be used to help to offer respite to people living with cancer and your support really does make a difference to their lives; here are comments from two of the many families we have been able to help recently:

I would just like to say a big thank you for such a great break away from the stress and strains of the past two years. I really can’t explain how much it has helped us out andgiven us a new positive attitude towards life. Thank you for all your hard work in helping families like ours in difficult situations. Craig.

We would like to say a massive thank you to all at Sail 4 Cancer, for giving us the holiday of a lifetime. Itenabled me to gain my confidence back and once again try new things. And for all three of us it gave us the opportunity to laugh again, which as youcan imagine has been sadly lacking in our lives. I can honestly say we really didnt stop smiling the whole week… We are all eternally gratefulas you have given us the ability to laugh again, which is a wonderful gift. Amanda.

Thank you again for your much appreciated support

Kind regards

51 boats turned out across four fleets for a day’s racing in varied conditions to test across the sailors’ range of skills. Leigh and Lowton sent the largest fleets of boats, and won three of the four fleets, allowing(?) our own Sam Hall to win the Junior fleet, from KirkKnights of where other than Leigh & Lowton

GP14 Northerns

The GP14 Northern Area Championship was held at the club on 20/21 June. The forecast suggested there should be a good breeze to benefit good racing, and with a bit of luck racing would be over before the showers move in later in the afternoon.

There was a fleet of 28 boats competing for the trophy, with six from Bass. After a hard afternoon’s sailing the sailors retired to the bar for a well earned drink or three. The visitors head the series overnight, with Dave and Jackie Gebhard taking the lead after race one and two, but Neil Platt, with our own Phil Smith crewing, in overnight lead with two firsts and a fifth. Mike Senior and Luke Shaw is second on equal points. Best Bass boat is Dave and Lynn Lawson, presently lying in 6th position.

Sunday started with a bit of an overcast morning, but what would you expect for the summer solstice?! The threat of rain had reduced, and the wind would be lighter than Saturday but there should be plenty to ensure there is a fair competition between those fighting for key positions.

Just two races, but all to race for. Despite the forecast, the light winds resulted in a delay to the start of racing which is now underway. Mike Senior is the helm that took best advantage of the conditions in race 4 and he went on to win the race. After race 4 the only two boats in contention for the championship trophy were that of Mike Senior and Neil Platt.

As the rain came in at the end of the race the wind filled slightly, and the fleet was very much split depending on whether they had taken the port or starboard side of the beat. Neil clearly must have taken the wrong side as he retired at the end of the beat leaving Mike the championship winner, who went on to finish the race in pole position. Locals Dave and Lynn Lawson had a good final race finishing in 2nd place and 3rd overall.

Josh Gebhard and Kieran Parsloe of Derwent Reservoir sailed well, finishing 9th overall winning the silver fleet. Gareth Hughes and Charlotte Hill of Hollingworth Lake finished 19th overall and won the bronze fleet.

As luck would have it, the sun came out as the race finished!!

Handicap/Mirror Open

Although high winds were passing through racing was optimistically going to start at 1pm, but after a reckie on to the water by the OD the postponement flag was hoisted and the situation reviewed at 2pmUnexpectedly the wind eased considerably, and the fleets were on the water by 2.30pm. Of course, while waiting for the start the wind picked up. It was as blustery as to it can, and although there were many capsizes, the conditions were challenging but sailable. The courses had runs and reaches, and when the gust was there, there were excellent planing conditions.

As ever, Toggle gets a mention – this time for managing to take out a competitor (Lewis Tyson in a Topper!) by hooking Lewis’ mainsheet onto his bow sprit on the startline!!

Some consistent sailing by Dave and Jackie Gebhard in a GP secured them a first and second to put them in overnight lead. The next three boats are all on equal points, partly because in each race the RS400s had untypical capsizes. In the first race Robbie D and Big E went in on a ‘roll’ gybe on screaming reach, having dipped their pole in the water, and Scumper and Zefer did something similar in the second race – though they managed to ground their boat on some submerged fence posts! Mike Moore and Sally sailed consistently and secured two thirds.

Some excellent and consistent sailing by Jack Lawson in the mirrors gave him a commanding overnight lead with two firsts. His only competitor in the second race retired!

Sunday’s forecast was not good – it was likely to be too little wind rather than too much though

The forecast was right, there was not a lot of wind and a 10.30 start seems somewhat unlikely!

Well the sunshine held for a lot of the day, and the wind did fill in eventually, though it was never going to be steady with a WSW toying with NW airs. Only two races were sailed on Sunday

Scumper and Zefer sailed consistently well taking a 2nd in race 3, but a 1st in the final race meant they snatched the trophy from Dave and Jackie Gebhard in their GP, who had another day with two good results (3rd and 2nd).

In the Mirror fleet, Nicky Haigh and Ruby Charlesworth from Royal Windermere made the most of the conditions and secured two firsts which when added to their 4th from yesterday, gave them six points, the same as Jack Lawson. The tie break on the last race gave the trophy to Nicky.

Topper Association Winter Regatta 21/22 March

With 85 boats entered the site was very busy this morning as campers woke to a misty morning after a cold night. Saturdays racing should have started at 11am but the mist was very slow to clear and it was after 2pm before the fleet took to the water. Some eager starters caused several general recalls, so it was to be another hour before the first race got under waySunday dawned with stronger winds which continued throughout the day keeping the many rescue craft occupied standing by while capsized dinghies were righted by their helm. It was to be another long day on the water! – The fleet went out at 10, sailed three races and were back at 2.

It really was a series of two halves with some competitors doing well in Saturdays lighter winds and others favouring Sundays gusts. Overall there was a good mix of conditions over the weekend to test the competitors, but Felicity Foulds from Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, mastered them, was consistent, and took the championship title.

The Regatta which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

RS200 Open

Bassenthwaite is today holding its first RS200 open meeting. It’s a glorious day, but only a light wind. There are 19 competitors.

The light and variable conditions made it difficult not only for the competitors but the OD as well who had to change the line of the windward/leeward course for each race. This was not helped by the wind swinging around Sale Fell and giving two different winds for the beat in one of the races.

As ever, the best was saved till last in that the sea breeze came in and held to give good sailing conditions. The racing has been close at the front end of the fleet but Mike Saul and Meg Fletcher from Yorkshire Dales worked their way up the fleet a place per lap to win the final race and series overall

Our local heroes consisted of Andy and Emma Smith who were able to count a 2nd and 3rd to finish 5th overall

Club racing comprised a pursuit race and long championship series. In the pursuit race, the course was set to suit a southerly breeze but with the wind swinging around Sale Fell there was a shadow hanging over the windward mark, and the S and SW winds tended to fight each other, giving little opportunity for the later starters to catch up. With the committee boat opting to take the easy option and sit on station for the finish there was some confusion by less experienced sailors as to how they should finish and in fact they never made it!

In the second race, the sea breeze came in and turned the main beat into a fetch

Notable moment of the day must go to Commodore Shunty who managed to capsize briefly at the windward mark – well that was bad enough, but after righting, the boat went over again and into the mud requiring a pull out of the mud by son Chris, and of course the odd shriek of laughter from wife Elaine as she and William passed Steve and Ruth

Tinker Rally

Tinker Rally

What a beautiful morning – very few clouds, with a patchy breeze sufficient for the Tinker fleet to enjoy an early 1030 start

By the time club racing started the wind had filled in from the SE, and the course allowed some good planing on starboard tack, but not always on port! Robbie D and Andy Smith were both sailing lasers and trying to persuade the OD to have a course that preferably had no beats! Ruth Critchley ventured out with Mike for her first sail/race in an FF.

The wind held for the afternoon racing and the beats were even longer – from 2 – 7! (Just for Robin and Andy?). There were again some good reaches, a bit challenging at times, especially for Judith Currie, but she survived them! The final race was to be the decider for the trophy between Mike Moore and Val Bell, but it was her consistent sailing, and finishing second to Neil, that secured the Tinker Trophy for her and Ken

The Tinkers had an enjoyable rally, although their fleet was slightly depleted this year with just 12 boats, but the weather and conditions were probably the best they’d enjoyed at Bass for several years. David Warren secured the overall trophy yet again, and no doubt he’ll be back next year to defend it

Overall winner David Warren with Elaine Hunt

Saturday: Adverse weather strikes again! This time drizzle with little wind – it makes a change for the Tinkers as they have recently suffered from too much wind at this event. How things change! By the time the racing started the drizzle had passed through, the wind picked up slightly, and the afternoon turned out nice for a pleasant sail.

William and Elaine in an RS400 failed to shake off and break away from Mike and Kayla in a FF, on the two long runs, but it was Val and Ken in their GP that took the honours on handicap in the first race

Mike was called back for being over the line in the second race but was soon back in contention, sufficient to ‘stuff Val’ (as he put it) at the windward mark. Robin Dawson sailed well in his laser to take the lead for a couple of legs and went on to win the race just 14 secs ahead of Mike. Val finished 3rd to take overnight lead

NW Area Topper Open – 5/6 July

‘Turn round the man’s sinking’

There were 23 entrants for the North West Junior Travellers and 29 for the Topper North West Area Championships. The first race was held in ‘challenging’ conditions with a brisk southerly wind straight down the lake.

OD Phil Smith set a beat from 1 to 8 through the white horses. One gust annihilated a large part of the fleet at which point our local superhero (and commodore) came to the rescue of a bright pink optimist (or was he really trying to enter the race?). Unfortunately he capsized at the first gybe mark and had to be rescued himself – maybe a flying fifteen next then – surely he can’t capsize one of them?? The first Ruth in the rescue boat knew of this drama was the former owner of said Optimist shouting ‘Turn round the man’s sinking!’.

The Bates helped with the rescuing and achieved the record ‘ how many kids can you fit in it’ – another challenge for Bass week?

After lunch the wind died down and did the usual Bass 360 shifts so the races were much more serene on the rescue front; maybe not for the competitors nerves though. Elsewhere there was some jiggery pokery going on on the Bates where for some reason all the heavyweights had to hang off the front. Maybe Alan could explain?

In the travellers the final results wereSam Hall first in the Junior fleet Hayden Griffiths first in the Optimist fleet and Tom Neeson first in the Youth fleet. Well done to them all.

The Toppers are back tomorrow after a film show tonight although Elliot Hanson seems to have it all sewn up with three firsts today.

The Bass sailors were away at the Birkett - apparently Toggle hasn’t needed rescuing this year so far. There’s always tomorrow though………..
