Our bonfire celebrations are being held on 7thNovember. Please bring along a large display firework to make the event all the more spectacular. Hot snacks will be available. The bonfire will be lit around 6.30pm
Our grounds chairman is asking for help to build the bonfire on the morning of 7thand would ask any keen helpers to attend from 10.30am
Views were unanimous. This was the best Members social event at the Clubhouse for quite a while. Claire, Lucy and Kirstie had pulled out all the stops. There were immaculate tartan table covers and serviettes plus a wee dram of whisky at each place setting. In the absence of a piper, Alistair was in charge of downloading the themed music.
And then the guests arrived with some suitably attired for the occasion. Pauline wore, arguably, the most chic Scottish outfit while Graham had, without doubt, the most flamboyant national dress – to which Judith commented that he wasnt with her!
Proceedings started with Mark summoning all to the tables before AJ, complete with kilt, recited an Ode to the Haggis ending in the ritual stabbing! This was accompanied by Alistairs bagpipes and the downing of the dram! The three chefs then served all with the main course featuring the haggis and, despite generous portions, there was another helping for all who fancied one. Next came a fruit pudding with whisky laced cream for those who dared. And, finally, a gigantic cheeseboard with six varieties of cheese was placed on each table.
Some abandoned this final offering and took to the dance floor to make the most of the music which, by then, seemed to have moved into an Irish theme! Others just relaxed and chatted at their tables and nearly three hours had passed before some made the move for home.
Who needs a sailing season when we can have pre season events like this one?
Thomas’ Twitterings
The event provoked some thoughts and observations from a man that almost always has a camera to hand
The great chieftain o the pudding race is addressed by AJ. Probably the only time a Haggis has been addressed by a kilt wearing Sassenach wearing gold coloured Budgie Smugglers under his kiltThese galley slaves briefly deserted their post trying to have a peek at the Budgie Smugglers, obviously they had been given information about what Alan was wearing under the kilt. The MacPatricks were there too!
The last Sunday before Christmas was very wild, but so mild the only place Santa found some snow to park on was Skiddaw so he had to hitch a lift to the club in one of our Dories.
While waiting forhis arrival, there were games, face painting, and a tea party.
The children were clearly excited to greet him, and he was invited into the clubhouse where he handed out some presents, and sang a few songs before leaving for his next engagement!
These Queens were so crowned for supporting their kids during training (and other times too!)
The annual dinner dance was held atHundith Hill Hotellast night, and was attended by 80 members and guests, including Bass Week friends Kevin Bilham and Gary Ungless and their wifes. In fact their efforts to attend were recognised during Commodore Andy Smith’s speech and alternate prize giving when they were awarded a a spare trailer wheel (due to be proudly displayed in the home club of Ely!).
AJcould be more exposed than he usually is (whilst cleaning) if he sports the new garment awarded for being King of the mop!
The Queen’s to the left received their crowns for the ongoing support of their children through sail training and beyond.

For those that have bought tickets for next week’s dinner dance, please note that the timings have been amended to 7pm arrival for 7.30pm dinner.
Just before the bonfire was lit and fireworks released, a prize giving was held for the Youth Squad to celebrate their successes throughout the season both during training, as arranged and delivered by Neil Garrison, and in club racing.
Congratulations to one and all, and we hope they all return to challenge us next year!
A weekend to ourselves, no visitors, no scheduled racing, just camping on site, team games, fun in Toppers, barbeque, and rain showers thrown in.
Here’s some pics of the rounders match (which went ahead on Tog’s new grass! – perhaps it’ll repair before Bass Week…), and the Topper challenge (a video will be prepared some time in the future).
[lg_slideshow folder=”album/14sundry/Fun weekend” display=”slide”]
Several bags of charcoal were more than enough to overcome the evening showers that threatened the barbeque – there were several sets of glowing (and singed?) knuckles shared between the generally male chefs before Claire’s bingo got underway, with some novel calling. Mark N took the prize first line, and Judith K the overall prize despite daughter Andrea making numerous iffy claims earlier…
Sunday started withsome practicing of gate starts forthe GP fleet beforefor the forthcoming Worlds. Shunty opted to show the way in the first start by skimming the transom of pathfinder Dave/Lynn only to narrowly avoid being wiped out by son Chris in the Gate boat! A couple of starts later and helms were more in tune with the procedure.Inthe afternoona one-off race in memory of Pete Ballard, from which donations will be given to the Samaritans. The course took the fleet down to 14, which on the western side of the lake was slightly in the shade of Sale Fell and led to some wallowing, especially by Shunty/Ruth who lost a good lead while the asymmetrics planed to windward of them.Overall, it was the GPs that took the honours, led by Dave/Lynn, ahead of Bean/Alan in a F15, and then Val/Ken.
There was slight embarrassment when someone mistakenly sailed the Commodore’s boat believing it to be a club boat! Intriguingly Sazzle started in a Laser Radial and finished in a Topper – how did she do that?!
A short prize giving was held with prizes awarded by Commodore’s daughter Katia
All in all a fantastic weekend with a difference.

Mike/Kayla had been racing at Ullswater over the weekend and were delighted to beat Steve Goacher in one of the races! Steve has confirmed he will be taking part in the Flying 15 Northern championships which are being hosted at Bassenthwaite on 23/24 August. Book early and save 10

On 15 Dec 2013 17 youth squad students and parents descended on Workington’s 10 Pin Bowling Alley.
As most of us were beginners the owners of the alley had kindly put down guides to make sure that all balls would knock down at least one skittle. This did not stop some of our balls bouncing from one side of the track to the other before eventually knocking a few skittles down. The guides also did not stop some of the adults really heavy balls being pulled by really strong gravity onto the wooden track making a big bang and causing the whole building to shake. The owners therefore soon came over to point out that special ramps could be used to help launch the balls and help steering, and also to tell us that we should not throw the balls at the skittles. Although we tried the ramps this was not real bowls so we went back to launching the balls by hand.
Eventually we all got the hang of letting go of the balls at the right time, height and angle to point them in the right direction without killing anyone.
Elle Grieves made an early start by judging her bouncing off the sides to hit the middle pin time and time again getting several strikes and many 10’s. Despite everyone else trying really hard Elle’s lead continued to grow. By the end of the game she had almost twice as many points as anyone else.
Here’s to a well earned victory. Very well done.
A special mention also goes to Louise who spent so much effort throwing her balls that she had to lay down in the lane after every throw. A really good try.
Some of the mums said that they were trying to get as few points as possible to make the rest of us feel good. Tell that to the lad in the next lane with 4 squashed toes.
Of course Elle will have to come again next Christmas to defend her Tiara.(little Crown)
This victory shows that Elle has a strong will to win, and we look forward to the first race of the new season in Toppers between Elle and Hazel.
Hope that you are looking forward to March 2014 when we take to the water again.
