Time for Celebration

Congratulations to John and Lucy Telford on the belated birth of their first child Jack James.

A poor forecast dampened enthusiasm for the weekend’s sailing, Bridget stresses that she did manage to sail two days in a row though and is lying 4th in the championship.

The Bass Burgee was Sunday’s pennant race, held in a good Southerly that took the fleet to the top of the lake. It may have been a hard slog up, but the reaches back down made it all worthwhile. John Halliday was enjoying one reach so much that he missed out a mark rather than take down his gennaker. Rory Yardley in a Vortex battled against Neil Currie and Toggle in an RS400 upwind, but pulled well away off wind to win on handicap.

24 Hour Race

Did Bridget wet her pants write her speech? Well it was needed, because we did it – after a nerve wracking final two hours (from the remoteness of the website!), in which Bolton kept closing the gap, we won the 24 hour race for the 2nd time with several minutes to spare.

Well done to all our team, and their managers and supporters on an excellent job well done.

The sponsorship from Lloyds Motors of Cockermouth is greatly appreciated. If they can provide us with a boat next year (or a suit of sails will do), so much the better!!!

It’s a tough trophy to defend, but I’m sure we’ll be there again next year.

A message from the competition:

Well done Bass. Whatever dance you did to get the wind back in the last hour certainly worked!! Also, how much did you pay the larks off to drop the protest?? Seriously though, it was a cracking finish and well done to Phil for keeping it together…. just.

All the best from Dale and the lads and lasses at Bolton SC.

Enterprise NW Areas

The Lake District had the best of the weather on Saturday. Some contestants, from as far afield as Penzance, almost aquaplaned through water laden motorways on their way up. Here are a selection of pictures from the first race which saw local helm Pete Lawson take the lead from the end of the first beat through to the finish.

Race two proved devastating for those helms that did not know their port from their starboard, and rounded the windward mark the wrong way (despite there being a lead boat!). Mike Birch won race two following a big lift on the final beat which knocked Pete Lawson down to third.

Glorious blue skies and a terrible forecast for Sunday! Despite some gusts from the South West as the course was being prepared, the Southerly wind held, and increased at times, for the rest of the day. Again, there was some excellent racing throughout the three races of the day. There was the odd capsize (well by Mike Birch to be precise!), and one when the helm fell out of the boat.

The overall winner was Chris Fry from Hallamshire who beat Bass’ Pete Lawson by one point.

Bass Week Memories

A 360° view from Bass Week

Monday’s racing started with a major wind shift on the first beat that shuffled the normal finishing order somewhat, but left the race without a beat and little chance for catching up – or so you would think. The forecast breeze came in at lunchtime, and promptly faded in time for the afternoon race. The shifts were there for the taking, if only you could get to them!

Fatal Slip in Banana Stakes

The weekend finished with a pennant race around the lake. The race for the Banana Stakes, presented by former Trustee Bill Anderson, was run on a personal handicap basis. There were mixed fortunes throughout the race, firstly, Mike Moore tried his best to luff Ian Campbell off the lake – but no joy! This allowed Keith Jamieson to overtake the pair and start chasing leading F15 Paul Burnell. Although, Paul kept increasing his lead on the way to the end of the lake, Ian and Mike nibbled away at his lead on the way back – was the pressure so much that he opened up the lead by missing a mark? No Paul had just not written the course down properly – you’d think he’d have learnt after making a similar mistake in the morning race!

The winds favoured the other fleets on the return trip, and brought the whole fleet closer together. After the final results were calculated, Val and Ken Bell were declared winners of the race from Margaret Trotter and Mike Chappell.

GP14 Open Meeting

The weather certainly couldn’t make its mind up this weekend. Sunshine and showers is part of the story, with the wind playing games for the competitors throughout the weekend, it made OD Neil Currie a nervous wreck!

Following a barbeque, a late night on the dance floor (or pool table), with a bit of Stella as sustenance, left some sailors jaded for Sunday’s racing. But the competition remained strong. At lunchtime on Sunday, after three races, there was all to play for in the final two races as David Lawson, Phil Smith, and Neil Platt were all on equal points.

David Lawson secured race 4, but this still left the other two in with a chance on the final race. Just after the start of race 5, the OD had his head in his hands as John Telford put up his spinnaker on the first beat to 7. Having managed to lead three others astray, Telf was able to watch the rest of the fleet for the way to go as he drifted in the shadow of Skiddaw. However, the Hodgkins boys heading for the shadow of Sale Fell, also put their spinnaker up and secured an excellent lead. Mum Jose couldn’t stand the tension and went for a shower to put on her glad rags for the prizegiving. When she came out, the boys had suffered the fate of many over the weekend, having been stuck in a hole while some of the fleet caught up and passed them by. From this point, David and Phil battled for first and second place through to the end, with David securing another first, and a commanding win of the open meeting.

Commodore Jose Hodgkins awarded the prizes, and leading visitor Neil Platt thanked the club for putting on another excellent event (despite the weather!)

Glorious Weekend

Blue skies, and light – medium airs made for an excellent weekend’s sailing. Those that were away on holiday, would struggle to match the glorious weather.

Emily Carruthers tried her hand at crewing for her dad in his F15 and secured a first place. The winds weren’t so kind in the next race, but who cares, she enjoyed it!

The Hodgkins boys had a good battle with Hugh Godfrey and Rhonwen Bryce, and came out on top securing second place overall.

There was some close racing throughout the weekend with both the F15 and Mirror series being determined on the last race. Final results for the weekend, together with a championship update follow.

GP 14 Masters – (4000+ years of experience on the water at once?!)

Click here to find out what went on! The GP14 Masters got off to a brilliant start on Saturday (apart from two general recalls!) with good winds, courses and excellent racing.Bridget got her nibbles out again on Friday, and then it was Elaine’s turn on Saturday (in celebration of Mike’s forthcoming retirement).

Click on the marquee to find out what went on inside!! Apologies for the occasional fussy picture!

After a late night for some, and having tried their best to drink the bar dry, they started Sunday with a bacon buttie and waited for the wind to come in. By 11.30 OD Phil Smith had everyone on the line and got them off to a clean start. Unfortunately the wind had shifted and the first beat was somewhat one sided and this led to some different faces at the front of the fleet. A nifty bit of mark shifting reinstated one beat, but the new leaders held their own for the rest of the race.Graham Flynn’s 4th in this penultimate race was sufficient to secure the series.
The last race had a couple of shaky starts before the black flag started to hit home. The battle for 2nd overall took place between Neil Platt and Richard Instone. Although Neil was close on Richard’s tail, Richard was able to take advantage of one lift that split up the pair for the rest of the race, thereby securing 2nd place. As for the final results? – Click here.

Commodore Jose Hodgkins thanked all that had helped make the weekend such a great success – especially Andy Smith for all his hard work. Secretary Joan Cowan presented the prizes.

Graham Flynn and GP14 President Toby Taylor expressed their thanks to the club for running such a successful event (and beating the weather forecast!)

Overall winners Graham Flynn and Frank Nickles from Bartley Silver fleet winnes Dave Pickering and Linda Estaugh

Bronze fleet winners Richard and Hazel Whitehouse Mike Fairlamb and Eric Smith were the highest finishers with a combined age in excess of 100!

Graham Knox was the higest placed helm over 60 Graham Jones was the highest placed helm over 50 Frank Nickles was the winning crew over 40

and a word from a happy sailor which makes all the effort worthwhile………Thanks for a superb weekend, apart from the multiple restarts in the last race, for which we only have ourselves to blame, it was great, lots of good memories and not to many aches and pains. Well done on the web site, and generally all the hardwork that has gone in throughout the weekend.

Look forward to visiting again.

Good sailing,

Handicap/Laser/Mirror Open

The sun shone and many visitors had an excellent weekend’s racing with a fantastic backdrop of Skiddaw. Some even had the energy to dance the night away at the disco. The racing was close enough such that the handicap and mirror results were both dependent on whatever happened in the last race.

At the prizegiving, Bridget thanked all who had helped throughout the weekend from OD, through rescue, to catering and bar.

Handicap winners (in a 49er) Mark Fearnloy and Chris Spicer from Morecambe and Heysham
