Sunday Sunshine

Despite a wet and windy forecast, as well as a drizzly morning, Sunday turned out to be a great sailing day. A short postponement was all that was needed for the drizzle to disappear, the strength of the gusts to subside, and a few gaps in the clouds to appear.

Ever positive, OD Preston was raring to get proceedings underway only to find HE had left the OD bag ashore so the rescue crew were tasked with fetching it. It’s funny how they never seem to go flat out when you want them to!

The close reaches, and blustery gusts, were challenging for many (had Kayla’s arms stretched by the end of the race?), and too much for some, but it meant there was great planing conditions. Peter W started his day in a way that was to continue – capsizing, and getting into irons. Alastair may well have kept him good company in the capsizing stakes had he sailed his Vareo, but he took the cautious option and crewed for AJ while Sue preserved her energy for the afternoon pennant race.

With Poppy keen to maintain her lead in the Sandra’s Salver series, OD Preston just sent the fleet down as far as 11 (Surely he could be home by the time the race finished?). With a SW wind, the sailing conditions were as flukey as they come past 7, with sailing flapping and calm conditions occurring within seconds! Mike/Kayla led the fleet home winning with a six min lead on handicap. While retrieving his boat to shore he cooled off with a full immersion after slipping off the foredeck. Kayla was too shocked to ask if it was cold in there!

Fortunately Jim/Poppy’s efforts were worth it as even taking a 3rd place behind Kayla and Sue, Poppy remains in the lead for Sandra’s Salver (Long may it continue!)

All the best laid plans…

After a drizzly start, the weather cleared and the day got brighter as the afternoon went on.

Graham, the rostered OD, passed the baton on to William so that he could sail the whole weekend championship series. However, with a couple of mishaps along the way in each race it wasn’t to be his best day’s racing. A good second place was lost when there was a spinnaker malfunction when taking it down at mark 2. The next race he had a poor start which he was unable to recover from.

Simon/Jon were a little too eager at the start of the first race and opted to return even before a signal was sounded. They were also part of what seemed as if it was to be a three way protest when a bank of F15s looked set for a collision course with other fleets. Although Steve and AJ didn’t finalise their protest, Val has submitted one which will be heard on Sunday.

Mike, who was going to assist William (did he forget?), took advantage of the better weather to get back at the tiller of his Laser. However, due to some necessary adjustment of his clew tie down, he started several minutes after son Josh whose start was six mins after Mike’s scheduled start! Peter W went astray when he missed out a mark of the course and retired.

Although it was not too windy, there were a few capsizes to keep the rescue crews awake.

The overnight leaders are Neil/Nick in the F15s, Steve/Ruth in the fast handicap, and Jim in the slow handicap, each with two 1sts, The position in the GPs is much closer with John and Mike/Eric each with four points.

Sunday was windy (you know it’s windy when you can see the tops of the waves looking downwind!), but there was still a good contingent that took to the water. Ian’s race didn’t start off well when his start was delayed trying to sort his furling gear. He made up the 90 secs delay only to forget that he needed to take down his spinnaker at the end of the first run…. Ethan was out with Izzie in the RS200 again, practising capsizing techniques, as was Hugh in his Vareo.
Val/Ken were caught out at the gybe mark, and Ken seemed to be resting on the centreboard while Val swam around a bit… The F15s didn’t capsize, but a couple were flattened in some of the gusts. Jim/Poppy didn’t have any competition in the slow handicap fleet so raced with the bigger boys and, as they didn’t capsize, managed to beat Hugh over the finish line.  The stand in OD’s plan to have two races before lunch was snookered when finishers just headed straight for the shore after finishing (they usually ask what’s planned!).

After lunch the wind seemed to have abated a little, but there were more capsizes, and a feast of protests, interestingly between the same F15s. Decisions as to whether to fly spinnakers proved to be key, especially if they didn’t fill quickly after hoisting, as places were quickly gained or lost depending on whether it was done well. The heavy conditions started to take its toll on the fleet, and only six boats started the final race of the series, of which the two GPs opted to retire at the end of the first beat. Neil/Rory misjudged the start sequence and didn’t notice the rest of the fleet had started for well over 30 secs! Mike/Kayla had taken an early lead, with Simon on his tail. Another lap on, and AJ retired leaving just three F15s to fight it out. The finish proved to be very close with only about a boat length between each boat. Simon finished 1st, with Neil 2nd but Neil touched the mark and rerounded, losing a place to Mike in the process.

After racing a couple of the protests were heard, resulting in Simon being disqualified from race 4. As time was getting on, and various people were going out for dinner, the third protest remains in abeyance to be heard at a later date. (Hopefully no-one noticed one of the protesters, and one of the protest committee, dining at the same venue on Sunday evening!)

Numerous sailors were wilting before the end of the day, and are certain to sleep well tonight.

The overall winners for the weekend were Jim in the Slow handicap, Mike/Eric in the GPs, Steve/Ruth in the Fast handicap, and Neil/Nick/Rory in the F15s (subject to protest).

Great Winds – Shame About the Clouds

Sundays sailors were greeted with a Westerly Wind, force 3-4, but it was also Cloudy and Cold in contrast to Saturday. A number were feeling under the weather, apparently bedtime was 0430hrs, including the rostered OD who had swapped his duties so he could sail then slept in! A fine replacement, Ian Preston, cup of tea in hand stepped up to the mark as OD and ran 3 excellent races. He received advice from a number of competitors, ignored them all and did his own thing.

The Flying Fifteen Fleet was particularly impressive with 9 boats taking part and some close exciting racing. Neil and Rory led from Simon and Jon overnight both on equal points. The handicap fleet was dominated by Phil and Naomi in their RS 200 who won all the races from Mark and Joe in a 400. Dave and Lynn continued their domination of the GP14 fleet with 3 wins and Jim and Poppy were the only finishers in the Slow Handicap fleet and lead overnight.

A Rounders match is the entertainment tonight, we will report tomorrow on the result. I should mention that the crack on the Bates was so good the OD forgot to sound the Preparatory Signal in the 3rd race and had to postpone!!

Final Races in Morgan, Barf, Spring Cup & Red Sails Trophies

Saturday saw the above long series come to an end. Mike & Kayla had a 1st and a 2nd which made them clear winners of the Flying Fifteen Morgan Trophy. Dave & Lynn won all the races in the Spring Cup for GP14s. The Barf Trophy for the handicap fleet was won by Ian Hall in his Solo from Joe Roberts and various crews including mum Sally in a RS 400. The Mirror, Toppers and Slow Handicap were competing for the Red Sails Trophy and the winners were Jim & Poppy in the Hartley 12 from Mik in his Mirror. The BBQ that followed was superb and many, or some, did not retire to bed until 0430hrs celebrating our performance at the Eurovision Song Contest.

May Bank Holiday 2015

A busy bank holiday weekend with the Tera Northerns and Catapult Open running alongside club racing On Saturday the weather was blustery, cold, and drizzly but it didn’t put off many of the visiting Teras or Catapults from venturing out.

[lg_slideshow folder=”album/15sundry/tera/” display=”slide”]

There were various capsizes throughout the afternoon in Teras and club boats, because not many opted to continue on after getting upright.

Sunday started with the tail end of a wet stormy night, and despite the stronger, gustier winds, the Teras were back on the water for their 4th race. Numerous capsizes later, they came ashore for lunch before returning to the water for the final two races, by which time the rain had stopped and the wind abated.

At the end of the championship it was the Rastrick brothers from Ripon that took the honours in both fleets – Henry winning the Pro fleet, and Jamie the Sport fleet.

Tera Northern finalresults

After a problematic and aborted start in the morning, club and Catapult racing followed in the afternoon. The wind continued to ease, and swing around Sale Fell, which cast various shadows on the course for the 1st race. For the 2nd race, the wind had swung to the SW, but there were major shifts for the sailors to contend with affecting leads dramatically.

After some close, competitive racing the overnight leaders are Simon/Jon in the F15s, Phil/Naomi in the fast handicap, Dave/Lynn in the GPs, and Hazel in the slow handicap fleet.

Bank Holiday Monday was pleasantly bright, dry and milder, but there was still a good wind to offer thrills and spills to competitors and spectators alike.

The Catapults had one final race which determined the overall winner as John Terry from Gareth Ede from Yorkshire Dales after splitting the tie on points by the position in the final race.

In club racing there were a couple of notable capsizes in the Mirrors – Rob Smith leapt to save niece Lily from falling out of the boat causing them tocapsize, whereas Mik’s capsize and subsequent retirement was enough to win him the Peel Pot series.

In the F15s, Simon/Jon successfully held Neil/Rory at bay in the last race to win the Jak Pot. Phil/Naomi continued to master the fast handicap fleet, with three 1sts and a 2nd to Scumper in the last race, winning the May Holiday Trophy. Dave/Lynn took all four1sts in the GPs to win the Lyne Tankard with Mike/Eric 2nd

Annual Dinner 2014

2014-11-29 23.03.28
These Queens were so crowned for supporting their kids during training (and other times too!)

The annual dinner dance was held atHundith Hill Hotellast night, and was attended by 80 members and guests, including Bass Week friends Kevin Bilham and Gary Ungless and their wifes. In fact their efforts to attend were recognised during Commodore Andy Smith’s speech and alternate prize giving when they were awarded a a spare trailer wheel (due to be proudly displayed in the home club of Ely!).

AJcould be more exposed than he usually is (whilst cleaning) if he sports the new garment awarded for being King of the mop!

The Queen’s to the left received their crowns for the ongoing support of their children through sail training and beyond.

Congratulations in Order!

As the championship season draws to a close, wehave prepared the winners prize list.

There will be two prize givings this year, one for the Youths and Juniors which is to be held in the clubhouse at 6pm on 8 November, just before the firework festivities, and the other on 29 November at Hundith Hill Hotel as part of the annual prize giving dinner dance (Book your tickets at bassenthwaite-sc.org.uk/webcollect).

Prize givings are all about recognising achievements of everyone’s efforts throughout the season with the presentation of the relevant trophy. So there is where you can help.

  • First of all, if you won a trophy last year please make sure you engrave (if you warn permanent recognition of your achievement), clean, polish and return it to the committee room, preferably by next weekend 2 November
  • Secondly, turn up at the prize giving and congratulate the winners!

Sultry Saturday

Overcast, but warm, gentle winds were the order of the day for the RYA Onboard Youth Six Hour Relay Race which was held at the club today. Four teams of three/four youth sailors came from Derwentwater Marina, Lakes Leisure on Windermere, Low Wood Windermere and Bass. There was no random allocation of boats so three teams picked three boats with old sails giving away a potential advantage of new sails. The leading team changed throughout the day as the wind dropped and kept strengthening.

The final result had Lakes Leisure in first place. Bassenthwaite boys team, comprising Frankie Millar, Alex Wasilouski, David Rodger and Jamie Kerr, came 2nd. Third was a team from Derwentwater Marina and 4th Bassenthwaite Girls team comprising Izzie Hunter, Nikki Hutchman and Rosie Hogg. Next year’s event will be hosted by Derwentwater Marina.

In club racing, Simon realised the life of an OD is not as easy as it seems when it comes to setting courses – especially when the wind swings, or Sale Fell gets in the way of the gusts! In the F15 fleet Mike/Kayla strengthened their lead in the Dawson Trophy with another two wins, while Chris/Julie and Tim/Martin each had a 2nd and a 3rd.

Two wins by Val/Ken in the GPs from Alan/Sue enabled them to leapfrog into the lead of the Autumn Cup, pushing Alan into 2nd place.

Jim was on form again in his Supernova, taking two wins from Banter, but without enough results in the series it wasn’t enough to pass Banter who lies 2nd behind Scumper.

The breeze for sailors on Sunday was slightly stronger at times, and in the Asymmetric Cup Banter was able, with a bit of encouragement from the committee boat, to ‘get his finger out’ and build up his lead sufficiently to win from Joan/Jack and John/Janis. Perhaps he needed the same encouragement in the afternoon, as he came 2nd to Joan/Jack. Phil presently leads the series.

Mike/Kayla had two good races building up strong leads to secure two more wins from Val/Ken. Alan/Sue risked their new boat squeezing in at the start line but the other boats were clearly lenient as there was no collision with the committee or other boats, and they finished the morning with a 3rd. Jim C sailed with, and wore out, grand-daughter Poppy in Alan’s F15 in the morning, then sailed his Supernova in the afternoon, finishing 3rd. Mike leads the MJM Series.

Return of the Wind

After a couple of weeks with a lack of wind, the forecast for this weekend threatened to be the opposite with the potential for strong gusts to put many off even venturing out. Fortunately the general wind, and gusts, were toned down to provide some excellent, though challenging, sailing conditions.

Mike/Kayla and Ian/Lezli-Ann forced each other over the start line for the first race and had to return giving the other F15s a head start. Mike recovered, taking the lead and winning ahead of Tim/Martin, which was to be the same finishing order for the 2nd race too.

Scumper made the most of the winds pulling out a big lead in both races. In the first race Toggle was in capsize mode and slipped back down the fleet, meanwhile Banter was mastering his new RS100 and finished 2nd. In the 2nd race, it was Banter’s turn to practice his capsizes, and Toggle finished taking 2nd place.

On Sunday, as the wind strength increased and the number of boats sailing decreased. Despite delaying the start while Banter re-rigged his boat, he did not make the most of the opportunity. He capsized before the start, struggled up the first beat as he ferreted around in the bottom of his RS100, headed for the wrong mark, and spent another leg re-threading his gennaker downhaul, all of which meant new member Dave in his Solo trying to find his way around the course! As a consolation, Banter managed to make up all the lost ground and passed Dave on the final reach, but it was Dave that won on handicap.

In the F15s, Mike/Kayla were on top form and led the whole race with Ian/Lezli-Ann 2nd. Banter wasn’t the only person to have problems because AJ/Sue trawled their spinnaker at one stage…

Latest results

Afternoon lunch Herb realised that he could do with some practice at tying knots when a RIB drifted away! The final pennant race of the season took the fleet of four F15s and a Solo around the lake. With a gusting SW breeze, the notorious effects of Sale Fell were first noticeable as the fleet passed through the narrows at Scarness, and continued, on and off, until the boats were back in the main bay. Again Mike/Kayla led the fleet with Ian/Lezli-Ann 2nd. However, Dave had an excellent, though possibly frustrating, first sail around the lake finishing ahead of AJ/Sue on the water, and 2nd overall on handicap behind Mike/Kayla who won the Banana Stakes Trophy.

Kayla’s position as first female crew strengthened, and confirmed, her winning position in the Sandra’s Salver series after many years of trying!

RS Vareo National Championships

This weekend the RS Vareo Nationals are being held at Bassenthwaite, the home club of the defending champion, our own Vice-Commodore Mark Somerville.

The wind forecast is light, unfortunately, so will the lightweights have an advantage. Of course, there is the Bass micro-climate factor, so anything could happen!

The first race was delayed while the direction settled and bedded in, but racing got underway, and three races completed successfully. Scumper got two straight wins under his belt then had to fight off Toggle before securing his third! Banter sailed well and stuck on Scumper’s transom for most of the first race

Sunday’s forecast promising better wind strengths turned out to be all but false hopes. Club sailors took to the water and eventually started but the wind direction and strength was variable leading to all points of sailing, on most legs, with greatly varying wind strengths!

As for the Vareos, one race started, but abandoned, due to both legs being a beat, run and reach at the same time so the results remain as Saturday evening.

Meanwhile club sailors endured more of the conditions that blighted them in the morning

Monday’s forecast was good for sunbathing, sailing wise we’d have to wait and see… Perhaps the sailors will have more luck at the bingo this evening – well Peter Ballard certainly did as he won!

The forecast was right – sun, no wind, and consequently no sailing. So the results stand as Saturday evening and Scumper retains the title of RS Vareo National Champion!

Final results:

In club sailing, after a bit of a wait, two races were sailed back to back, and some of those that would not have otherwise sailed due to the Vareo Nationals were able to partake.

In the F15s, Ian/Lezli-Ann took another two wins and won the Flying Free Trophy with 3 points, ahead of Graham/Sally who had won the first race after some consistent sailing.

Joan/Jack won the handicap fleet August Trophy with Steve/Ruth 2nd. Alastair, eager to get on the water after two days waiting for wind, had a great winning performance in the final race.

The GPs only sailed three races, all of which were won by Dave/Lynn/ Val/Ken’s two 2nds from Saturday were sufficient to earn them 2nd overall.

The Mirrors only sailed on Monday, Pam and Mik each shared a win, but as Pam won the final race it split the tie in her favour to win the Mirror Mug. Well done Pam
