MJM Trophy/Asymmetric Cup

Previously run as a long series, this has been compacted into a weekend series of 5 races. Sun and blue skies were the order of the day, while the wind struggled to settle down.

A forecast easterly did come in, but the strength was variable throughout the afternoon. Feedback from the sailors suggested the wind direction was equally variable! Simon was keen to suggest to the OD (every time he passed the Bates) that the course was in the shadow of Sale Fell.

Before the start, Gary queried AJ as to how Chris/Julie managed to stop dead still. He discovered a second later when, he too stopped dead in his tracks when ran aground! AJ opted to strip to his shorts before jumping overboard to get them underway again.

Scumper/Zefer had a flying start in the 2nd race, only to be recalled. Later in the 2nd race Simon/Jon were reluctant to give up their lead on Mike/Kayla and invoked some mega luging tactics. Although they won that war, Mike went on to win the battle…

Sunday was cloudier and cooler with slightly stronger winds which were to be useful to get the three scheduled races in (even if tiring for some sailors).

While Sue was recovering from her daughter’s wedding, AJ recruited Karen, the flagpole dancing decorator, as a temporary stand in. Tim was keen to push Simon over the start line in the first race, but failing to realise he too was over, and not returning after being recalled, led to him being awarded OCS.

As ever, Mik was enthralled by the tweets and webcam images, and decided to pop down to sail. Actual conditions put him off, so he returned home to watch the Grand Prix.

Tim was later involved in an incident with training officer Neil who collided with Tim, capsized, and realised his leg was caught in the mainsheet!

Banter was in the groove today, being more confident that he was finding how to tune his RS100, he was able to have some close racing with Scumper/Zefer, securing a 1st in the 2nd race of the day, to add to his bullet from Saturday. Scumper won the final race of the day and the Asymmetric Cup.

Simon/Jon had a better day leading all three races, but rear commodore Andy and Ginger Phil in a GP put in three good races as well taking a 2nd and two 1sts to win the MJM Trophy.

If you want to see how Andy/Ginger Phil worked the shifts check out this link that shows what was recorded on his GPS during the afternoon racing. It shows his 11miles of sailing!

Blue Skies…

… just weren’t enough. A lovely, sunny, afternoon but high winds, or was it low temperatures, put numerous would sailors off. So AJs stressful OD duty was straightforward- just get settled into a few cups of tea before abandoning racing for the day.

Winds eased overnight, but it was a wet start which seemed to dampen enthusiasm for the various sailors that were on site. However, after lunch the rain stopped and the one and only race of the weekend got underway – the Eric Twiname Trust pennant, typically raced around the lake. Fortuitously the OD only set the course as far as 10 as the wind eased soon after the start!

Alastair/Gayle in a RS200 were first to 10 and held off Scumper/T in a RS400 all the way back to Scarness. Despite being in the slowest boat, Jim/Poppy stayed ahead of a RS400 on the water, and won on handicap.

It’s All Over

What little breeze there was this morning quickly disappeared leaving a mirror like lake, and the OD quickly hoisted N over A to abandon the final race of the season. Joan/Jack were not displeased and they had turned up to defend their lead in the series, but their competition may have been limited due to a lack of interest after last night’s annual dinner

Annual Dinner 2014

2014-11-29 23.03.28
These Queens were so crowned for supporting their kids during training (and other times too!)

The annual dinner dance was held at Hundith Hill Hotel last night, and was attended by 80 members and guests, including Bass Week friends Kevin Bilham and Gary Ungless and their wifes. In fact their efforts to attend were recognised during Commodore Andy Smith’s speech and alternate prize giving when they were awarded a a spare trailer wheel (due to be proudly displayed in the home club of Ely!).

AJ could be more exposed than he usually is (whilst cleaning) if he sports the new garment awarded for being King of the mop!

The Queen’s to the left received their crowns for the ongoing support of their children through sail training and beyond.

Winter Series Update

Whilst there is glorious sunshine there is a total lack of wind so the OD has abandoned sailing for the day.

Last weekend there was only one race as the second race was cancelled due to no wind. Jim C won on the water in his Supernova, but Joan/Jack won on fleet handicap just 5 secs ahead of Ian in his Solo. Joan’s win took her into the series pole position one point ahead of Tony who still leads the personal handicap series.

One final deciding race next Sunday followed by the AGM!

Sunny Remembrance Day

Sunday started cold, bright, breezy but with some drizzle. Fortunately the drizzle soon passed through and 15 boats (well 16 if you include Gary’s new F15) took to the water after many sailors had put forward their advice and requests to the starters and OD which included finishing early so that some could get to Remembrance Day parades, and having the races back to back to avoid getting too cold.

Chris/Julie led both races in their F15, but were to be beaten on fleet handicap as several others were close on their transom. Joan/Jack would have been closer if they had headed to the correct mark on the first beat! Newbies Peter and Tony battled it out in their full rig Lasers while Jim grumbled around the course due to the lack of close reaches… With less than one min between the first five boats on fleet handicap, Peter took the honours ahead of Jim and Tony. Sailing directly to the correct marks helped Joan/Jack take a convincing win in the 2nd race followed by Chris and Jim. Tony leads the series 1 pt ahead of Jim.

On personal handicap, Tony won the 1st race from Jenny and Chris, while Chris won the 2nd race from Tony and Joan.

Winter on its Way

IMG_1340.JPGAfter the mildest halloween on record, reality is starting to strike with the start of November and the Winter Series. Despite a dreadful forecast, and overnight gales, there was a good turnout of 13 boats in sunny, gusty, and shifty conditions.

Steve/Ruth led the fleet in both races, winning both on fleet handicap, with Jim C taking two 2nds in his Supernova. Newcomer Tony King in a Laser Radial took a 3rd but won both races on personal handicap (No doubt Tony’s handicap will change for next season!). Chris/Julie secured two 3rds on personal handicap putting them in 2nd place.

There were numerous capsizes throughout the day – perhaps Alastair and Nigel competing for the most capsizes?

Though many would have expected the day to be written off due to the forecast heavy winds, two races were sailed in blustery and challenging conditions.

Congratulations in Order!

As the championship season draws to a close, we have prepared the winners prize list.

There will be two prize givings this year, one for the Youths and Juniors which is to be held in the clubhouse at 6pm on 8 November, just before the firework festivities, and the other on 29 November at Hundith Hill Hotel as part of the annual prize giving dinner dance (Book your tickets at bassenthwaite-sc.org.uk/webcollect).

Prize givings are all about recognising achievements of everyone’s efforts throughout the season with the presentation of the relevant trophy. So there is where you can help.

  • First of all, if you won a trophy last year please make sure you engrave (if you warn permanent recognition of your achievement), clean, polish and return it to the committee room, preferably by next weekend 2 November
  • Secondly, turn up at the prize giving and congratulate the winners!

Check if you are one of this year’s winners here

F15 team racing, Osprey & 505 Open

Our Flying 15 team racing, Osprey & 505 Open is being held this weekend, however the weather forecast of strong winds proved to be accurate and put many off travelling. Even those that did turn up were surprisingly reluctant to rig their boats.

Though windy with heavy squalls passing through, conditions were sailable and thirteen F15s rigged and set off for the start. Unfortunately only twelve boats made it to the start as one boat lost its mast on the way out! Soon after a clean start another squall passed through and a couple of boats were temporarily flattened. There were several changes of position as some coped with the gusts better than others, but the carnage continued with two ripped mains and another broken mast (perhaps one dive exercise too many!?). It was wonderful for them to be told after the event – ‘you shouldn’t have done it like that!’

For the second race there were only seven starters. Simon Longstaff/Jon Denwood had the 2nd best start compared to John Somerville/Keith Thomas, but pulled out an early lead. A gust of wind at the gybe mark flattened their boat, Simon fell/was washed out, and their race was over. Unusually Mike/Kayla showed all their bottom with one gust, and subsequently retired when their gooseneck broke.

Mark Ninnim/Ian Preston practiced a Chinese gybe but continued on their way, and enjoyed moving up the fleet again as boats dropped out!

Despite all the mishaps, sailors were keen to have another race, though they later changed their minds after warming up in the clubhouse with a nice brew!

The Bass micro climate didn’t beat the forecast, and the winds didn’t ease, so racing was abandoned, and an early prize giving held.

The winning Derwent Reservoir team – ‘We Must be Mad!’

There can’t be many events where a boat that gets demasted even before it gets to the start line is in the prize list, but Rod Huddleston/Alan Baker did just that as part of the second Derwent team ‘The Lads and One Lass’

One of the traditions of the team racing is to re-award the Grotty Potty. Last year it was won by Simon Longstaff, and although he was a worthy contender again this year, having done a ‘Tom Daley’ yesterday, he couldn’t and wouldn’t nominate himself, so he considered Dave Gebhard’s antics, including his swimming, but mainly for being down the creek without a paddle – boats taking shelter between races opted to venture into the mouth of the Ouse where it was shaded from the blasts of wind. No Dave didn’t try to sail under Ouse bridge but, unfortunately, he misjudged the shallow waters and went aground. At least he can look forward to nominating someone for their embarrassing actions at next year’s event!

October is Here

You can almost tell it’s October by the high lake level following recent heavy rainfall. Be aware that with any further significant rain that boats on the foreshore will be at risk from flooding.

When sailors arrived the lake was mirror like, but there were occasional flurries albeit from the wrong direction! The OD was happy to wait ashore and have a brew, but many of the sailors rigged their boats, and even went afloat. It was the hoisting of the answering pennant to postpone the start that seemed to generate slightly more sailable conditions, so the OD was soon on the water to set a course for the first race in the October Series.

Despite a very starboard biased start line which had everyone aiming for the committee boat end, there were several great starts, especially by Tony King. Fortunately the wind held, with the odd light patch, for the rest of the afternoon. A true line for the 2nd start and there was no-one near the line!

Joan/Jack mastered the conditions in their recently acquired GP, winning the first race, and finishing 2nd to Peter Whipp in the second race, to take overnight lead. Jim in his Hartley is 2nd with a 4th and 3rd, ahead of Ian in his Solo with a 3rd and 4th.

The forecast for Sunday was for even less wind! As sailors arrived, unexpectedly there was a gentle southerly, though the shadow of Sale Fell was expanding from the west…

The committee boat did go to set a course, and various zephyrs enabled the fleet to reach a start area, before the wind totally disappeared. An early lunch was called for… With no sign of the wind returning during the lunch break many packed away their boats. With most sailors gone, and the rescue boats packed away, the wind filled in from the west about 2.30. Hey ho….
